Alan Jones, Australia's most influential radio broadcaster, will retire at the end of this month, saying doctors had told him his workload was "detrimental" to his health.
The 79-year-old 2GB breakfast host has towered over Sydney's media, and Australian politics, for decades.
His breakfast program has topped the Harbour City's radio ratings since he began in the timeslot in 2001.
During his broadcast this morning Jones told listeners: "We are living in the world of coronavirus. The most repeated statement we hear is 'we must listen to the experts'."
"Well, the experts are telling me in no uncertain terms, and not for the first time I might add, 'continuing with the present workload is seriously detrimental to your health'.
"I have listened to the experts and I am taking this opportunity to indicate to my radio family that I will be retiring from radio at the end of this month.
Despite calling quits on his radio career, Jones will continue to broadcast on Sky News and write for The Daily Telegraph and The Australian.

I'll miss listening to the old bugger in the mornings!
I don't mind Ben Fordham, but I think Ray Hadley would have been a better choice,

He won't starve.
Where did I say he would starve?
I just pointed out that he did not have to drive to Sydney to do his radio show
Also I m pretty sure he still has a luxury unit here in Sydney.
Oh dear, I was just making a general comment not aimed at anybody.

was he actually a pedophile? I knew he was gay . but that's all.
I know very little about him as i lived interstate until i recently moved to NSW tho i had heard him a few times. and wondered how he got away with some of the vicious things he said but i didn't know he was a pedophile.
He probably was not actually involved with children; just young pretty boys over the age of consent? He was arrested in London for "cottaging" = "hanging around notorious men's toilets".
If you Google him you will find that he has a regular turnover of young male "butlers" in his life.
how many butt-lers he has does not concern me as long as they are of a legal age
how he talks about many subjects as a radio personality does.
saying a primeminister should be put in a sack and thrown in a river?
saying the PM of another country needs a 'sock in her mouth'
ect ect ect
just to get the bogans in society revved up.
as i'm sure any half intelligent listener finds stomach turning.
hes like the village idiot from the middle ages
he'll says a neighbour is a witch and he pops up with pitch fork in hand
come of guys, lets burn her!
but when the action begins hes no where to be seen
From what I gather John Laws wasn't much better, again I only heard him a few times in Melbourne but considered him to be arrogant and up himself. To my surprise now I'm in New South I pikced him up on another radio station than 2GB (I thought he'd died), and he is a **bleep** cat. A couple of talkbacks then hours of ads, so I won't listen again.

Haha I said he is a p u s s y cat and they beeped it out.

Just like when I said a was going for a F A G

It looks like 2GB is looking to take on a younger demographic and slowly divesting itself of the right-wing angry old men and are looking for gender equality byintroducing a cpl of female presenters.
It wouldn't surprise me if Alan Jones's "retirement" was not entirely due to "medical advice". He was always controversial, but I think his recent stoush with Ray Hadley over the Covid epidemic would have been the nail in the coffin.
There would have been some hard negotiations going on in the backroom, with Jones demanding full pay for the rest of his contract, and the blocking of Hadly for Breakfast Show. Given instead to his protege, Ben Fordham.
Steve Price has moved on to Triple M after his afternoon show on 2GB was axed. Deb Knight now runs the afternnoon show and doing a sterling job.

Chris Smith was recently axed but now runs the Sunday Morning breakfast show.
The Money Show is no longer run by Ross Greenwood is now run by another woman, Brooke Corte.
Andrew Bolt and Steve Price night show no longer appears.

No, we drove all the way - nearly 2000ks of dirt road in those days. For this little Pom only 4 months out from England it was quite an adventure. We quickly learnt the 'Nullabor salute' (a hand pressed with fingers splayed aginst the windscreen when passing another vehicle to protect against flying stones)

"[Jones] is attracted to TV because it's the one thing that could give him what radio couldn't: Melbourne," the executive said. "A national footprint. That's what he's been seeking for the latter half of his working life and that's what Sky will be pushing for now."
