'We will never, never compromise on Medicare': Opposition Leader Bill Shorten tells National Press Club
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has flatly ruled out compromising with Tony Abbott on Medicare payment changes.
In his first National Press Club speech of the year, Mr Shorten declared: "There are no circumstances under which Labor will pass the GP tax."
Mr Shorten was alluding to recent speculation that the Coalition might introduce a $6 co-payment fee for GP visits.
The Prime Minister, Mr Abbott, has denied he has any plans to do so. But the Opposition Leader went further, removing any hopes the Health Minister, Peter Dutton, might have held to pursue bipartisan reductions or changes to Medicare funding arrangements.
"We will never, never compromise on Medicare," Mr Shorten said on Wednesday.
"Prime Minister, give up the fight on the GP tax – you will lose."

"try repeating her whole statement not just the bit that suits your arguement." I agree T2844
“There will be no carbon tax under a government I lead, but let me be clear, I will be putting a price on carbon and I will move to an ETS.”
Hang on, instead of an ETS (cap and trade) in which market forces set a trading price of carbon, not the State, a statutory legislated price of $23.00 a tonne, with annual increases was passed according to the ABC "Carbon tax passes Senate" (State) Nov 2011. That would make it a tax ( a financial charge or other levy imposed upon a taxpayer (an individual or legal entity) by a state)
In a pre-election interview with The Australian's Paul Kelly Poor Me also said:
"I don't rule out the possibility of legislating a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, a market-based mechanism. I rule out a carbon tax.".

However rosy pink your sun glass is, a State imposed levy is a : TAX

Bill Shorten says Labor wants carbon tax replaced by ETS
Kevin Rudd says Labor 'got it wrong' on introducing carbon tax
Where did that pesky tax come from?

I think that "pesky tax" came about as a result of recognizing Reality and understanding that pollution generated by industrial enterprises in their pursuit of a few dollars more is degrading the environment for everyone else and his dog, and making life generally more uncomfortable than it need be.
And that if these industrial concerns want to persist with their activities, then it should come at a cost to them, as it surely comes at a cost to the rest of us.

And so you are under the misguided impression that a tax is somehow going ti purify the atmosphere.
I don't think that tax as a deterrent has ever worked but that is how it is sold to the ignorant masses and they fall for it hook, line and sinker.
Pity about that.

And so you are under the misguided impression that a tax is somehow going ti purify the atmosphere.
They're your words, not mine.
But if a company is going to conduct an enterprise which results in the emission of large amounts of pollution, then it's only fair that some sort of regulaion be placed on them in order to encouage them to structure their enterprise so that it is not so environmentally degrading.

And do you believe that an enterprise is prepared to absorb the tax? it will be passed on to the consumer.
There by hangs the plot, impose a tax on an entity who will pass it to the consumer and then collect more in tax from rising prices on good and services affected by the imposition of the tax.Typical smoke and mirrors.

Sure, in the real (albeit cynical) world, the cost will not be absorbed (mammon forbid!)
but will be passed on.
Then the consumer gets to excercise their right to shop around for a cheaper price or decide not to buy in the first plce.

Death and taxes. We need taxes on those who conduct obscenely profitable businesses and especially on those who significantly degrade the environment in the process. Even if it's only a small repayment for their rapaciousness.

Hello folks. . . . we seem to have gotten a little off topic here. Can we please bring the discussion back to the topic "We will never, never compromise on Medicare".
on 28-03-2014 02:37 AM
It's a phony plot.
The imposition of taxes is nothing more than a tax grab pure and simple, designed ti fill the coffers for ever increased spending
.

Not so, those taxes could be spent on healthcare; Medicare, even.
