Greyhounds are so intelligent and lovely, patient and grateful for any bit of kindness.  It breaks my heart to see the way they are treated here in Australia.  In Europe racing is just a hobby, no betting, no high $ prizes, no razzmatazz.  The racing club meetings are fun family days, with picnic and in the end of the day the dogs go home to their spot on the couch with the cats and kids.  When I told my friends in Europe what the "sport" is like here they did not believe me.

I will be interesting to see what will happen now.  But most likely the top people will away with some fines, their dogs will be transferred to their wife's (or kids', or second cousin's) names, and all will go on as before.  People who know what is happening will be too frightened to testify in court.  Well, people who do this to defenceless animals are dangerous people, capable of anything.

My son posted this on Facebook to show how strict councils are in regards to Greyhounds,(plus to show how

others can disobey the rules without consequence).

We as greyhound people face tough rules and regulations that have to be adhered to or we face bans.

Yes the dogs are in cages because of the public conception that greyhounds are vicious which most are not

just like any other dog.

We used to walk our greyhounds at public dog parks only to be constantly attacked by labs,German

Shepherds,Bullies and Kelpies because the dog is not on a lead as our dogs are and it's clearly marked on

signs yet we are the ones getting in trouble for doing the right thing.

We have a greyhound run which is again marked on signs and have people with little fluffy dogs walking there

dogs not on leads there while you are trying to run our dogs

People are trying to stop racing so we can't get bad publicity.

The public can make uninformed comments about greyhounds yet we have to watch what we say.

We moved out of town to save more dogs as we were told we were alowed more only to have the neighbours

dog attack and kill 2 out of 3 of our kids pet rabbits and attack my wife on our own property while walking a

greyhound yet we are the ones who have to get rid of our dogs as the neighbour makes false claims that our

dogs bark all night,(He had five dogs but because of the neighbours false claims had to reduce it to two).

I have always loved the greyhound breed but owning one has been constant trouble because of the public

misconceptions.

If someone robbed a bank that doesn't make us all bank robbers yet a bad greyhound story makes all

greyhound people the same.

That just don't make sense.

Yes, there are many misconceptions about greyhounds.  I remember people telling me that greyhounds are vicious and would kill anything small including a child.  In fact I have never met a vicious greyhound, and I have met a large number, as I have several friends who used to have them.   Yes, greyhounds will rip small moving creature to bits if encouraged, just as my dogs will destuff teddy bear I give them to play with.  I never met a greyhound that I would not feel safe with.  I met plenty of kelpies, cattle dogs, shepherds, labs and other breeds that I would not trust, and the nastiest bite I got was from shi-tzu.  My sighthounds lived in perfect harmony with cats, rabbits, cavies, birds, ducks, chooks, peacocks, sheep, goats, pigs and horses.  The only "killer" dog we ever owned was my daughter's toy poodle; once she decided to catch a chook there was no stopping her, does not matter how much I screamed, and punished afterwards, she just waited for another opportunity to get another one.

And yes the councils have different rules for greyhounds & other breeds.  But that has nothing to do with what is happening in the greyhound racing community.  I am sure there are some people who truly care about their dogs, but they do not get very far.  To be able to continue being involved you need to have young animals, and as there are such strict rules on number of dogs people can keep, most people cannot keep their retired dogs.  GAP can only take so many dogs, so the excess are destroyed.

I  have no doubt that some greyhound owners care bout their dogs.

The issue  is about the cruel  live baiting of helpless animals.

But some have stated they want the whole industry banned,(that's what my post were aimed at).

Others about the euthanizing of Greyhounds,(again info given on how many other animals are euthanized by

the RSPCA,which doesn't take into account the ones euthanized by their owners).

I fully agree that these live baiting mongrels should have their whole business collapse on them, but the

penalties aren't severe enough at present,(it looks like the maximum ban is ten years, when it should be a life

ban).

They knew what they were doing and will do it again if allowed back into industry,(they can not be allowed to).

There is a "little" loophole where they can be refused back in when they re-apply as being of not good

standing for the industry,(so that 10 year ban can become a life ban),

A $30.000 fine also seems insufficient and needs to at least be multiplied by ten and they only face up to

two years prison.

Live baiting is a crime and is illegal so their whole business was illegal,(so it should all come under the

proceeds of crime banner).

As long as they serve jail time and are let in with the "general" population there they should receive some

justified punishment from the animal lovers in there.

The RSPCA and the Government need to work together to raise the penalties and fines for these type of cruel

practises,(that also needs to include dog fights and male chicken fights and anything that fits in to those

parameters).

Some positive action in NSW now. The two police states will do little to see these greedy evil individuals replaced.

I think to ask for the whole industry to be banned is wishing on the moon because it won't happen.   Too much money there for all, and kickbacks.  But there must be a regulatory body and close scrutiny of the trainers' methods.  But who will do it?

The RSPCA surely doesn't have the time or manpower, it is already flat out with other incidents of animal cruelty.  The Minister for Agriculture who oversees animal welfare  doesn't give a sh at.  In fact the only comment I've seen by him was not to express horror at this cruelty but the fact that 'illegal' cameras took the pictures and were 'trespassing'.   He's a useless tool.

I hope and pray this won't fade from the public eye.    I still shudder at it.

Last night 7.30 report was just about all about it.  Including interview with one of the people (Noble) who basically said that people send him dogs for him to make them run, and that is what they expect him to do, and this is the way to do it.

The problem is they see nothing wrong with it, just as the Japanese cannot see anything wrong with killing whales, and we do not think anything about eating cute little baby lambs.

The whole industry stinks, from live baiting, to treatment of the dogs.  If it does not shut down it will just go on.  Only with lot more care not to get caught.

I have never bet on the dog's, and certainly have no intention of doing so now.

I hope that TAB sub agency's refuse to run bets for dog's until this is completely sorted or better banned altogether, as there is no way to fully police this behaviour which I am sure will continue with these debase freaks.

I also feel for the dog's, they will no longer be able to retire as a pet, blooding can and does make a dog vicious, even when usually mild tempered.

All round disgusted.
