talkin' bout xmas

so my 1 thing i gift myself every christmas is a half leg ham, love fresh off the bone ham

normally i just cut/peel the skin back, remove most of the fat, then start slicing the meat and begin with it just as slices

then its sandwiches and toasted ham n cheese

i see a lot of things about cooking a ham, does anyone do that or is it just an american thing because its cold over there?

why cook an already cooked leg of ham?

Re: talkin' bout xmas

I was half watching a Maggie Beer Christmas special this arvo.

They had about a 5 kilo ham and they put it in the oven for about 25 minutes. It was just to set the glaze, I think. It certainly wouldn't have cooked much of the meat.

Re: talkin' bout xmas

Just as you do, straight from the bone, then sandwiches, then ham with poached eggs on top, or any other way.

Saw the Maggie Beer special too, but still prefer it as is.

Re: talkin' bout xmas

Certainly no need to cook it - but fancying it up by glazing it and heating it through in the oven is a very nice way to serve it if you want hot ham for the dinner table.

Personally, I rarely bother.  We also treat ourselves to half a ham for christmas - makes for many simple yummy dinners in the next few weeks😋

Re: talkin' bout xmas

We do it your way too, david.

I used to wonder the same as you though when I saw articles about cooking it.

Why overcomplicate things. Slice it, cold, ready to go.

Wish the rest of the meal was that simple!
