thanksgiving in Australia

Sarah Jane is on ABC news saying we should have thanksgiving here. Aren't we inundated with enough pseudo American culture already

The custom of Thanksgiving is not entierly American. It was brought to America with the early settlers from Europe.

Thanksgiving goes back way before Christianity and was celebrated annually after harvest was finished. Some called it Harvest Thanks Day, some had other names in their own language. Germans call it Erntedankfest.

Mostly in Christian times, people would bring some harvested goods to Church on a special day to give thanks to God. After the service all goods where distributed to the poor and needy in the community.

Why it was never implemented in Australia, I don't know, because even the English were giving thanks for their harvests long before Captain Cook found Australia. It is not an American only celebration. In Europe they may cook a goose or duck for this special dinner. In America the turkey became popular because they have plenty of wild turkeys and almost everyone could afford to shoot one for the Thanksgiving dinner.

To give thanks or not is an individual choice. We are very lucky here to have good and plenty food all year round. Something to be very thankful for.

I can prove that I recently read it... however I did not fact check it after I read it. It appears that it is false. It did sound a little too strange.

You can't really see the comments, but it is not true. I searched snopes, and although there are several reasons why the day might be called black Friday, slavery sales is not one of them.

Thanks for keeping me in line, golden. I'm stuffed to the brim from Thanksgiving dinner, and I had literally just read that. I was gobsmacked... but I should have realized that it wasn't real.... and I should have researched it. I'm glad you called me out... and made me do the research. I was wrong... but I did prove that I just read it... . 😉

Agreed, ban thanksgiving in Austraila, Treat the purchase of turkey as a 2ed degree felony, do raids of homes suspected of family's having thanksgiving dinner, anyone giving thanks for anything to serve no less than 4 months hard labor.
