a question poddy. what if people turned up on the northern coast and were employed as part of tones great vision ? can't he see the mutual advantage ? Gina gets her $2 dollar a day workers Plus those who can afford to buy themselves out of prison to build huts. it would make a few people lots of money.. surely that's a conservative ideal ? if the locals refuse to be exploited to that extent try refugees instead.
Gina would like the idea.

Fiesta, I would venture to say that the unlawful arrivals are aware that they are entering the country unlawfully.
They destroy their credentials.
Like you I too would make sure that my doors were securely locked. Letting potential invaders know what to expect is a good move. If someone forced their way in I would have them forcibly removed or eject the myself, there is no way I would succumb to threats of self harm.
If a person came to my front door and asked for help, and they were genuine in their need I would do everything i could to help them.
People respond better to a plea for help than a demand, well I do anyway.
It is now up to the government to let it be known that unlawful entry is not acceptable in any form.
No ifs or buts if you enter unlawfully you will be treated as an invader

Did you know that no assylum seekers of Australia have ever been suspected, accused of or convicted of terrorism?

LL: "Gina gets her $2 dollar a day workers"
Now put it in context LL , or at least quote accurately e.g. :
"LL: it is the case, Abbott only temporarily demoted his friend cory for appearances sake. being unavailable for comment is an act of omission which backs the statement if anything. bernardi's faction is a powerful one and will recieve ministerial responsibility as is the usual practice."
"LL: it is the case, Abbott only temporarily demoted his friend cory for appearances sake."
DY: "I guess we will find out when Abbott gives him a ministry position John."
Inconvienient history !

Only of they let the Indonesian government bluff them. If the people smugglers scuttle the boats and risk people's lives they must be responsible, our customs should not ever risk their lives to save the people as sad as it might be.
What Indonesia shoud do, or who should be held responsible, is irrelevent to the argument put forward in the OP. The simple truth is that unless the Australian Government is prepared to turn back unseaworthy boats regardless of the consequences, then the policy cannot work..

so how do our international committments fit into this? Australia is signatory on a Treaty that says we will accept assylum seekers.
I know that no one can really enforce that we do this, but won't the other countries get cross if we don't? The other countries that we hope to have good relations with.

Australia is signatory on a Treaty that says we will accept assylum seekers.
And how can we apply due process to evaluate the boat peoples' claim for asylum if we just turn back the boats?
There might be a few genuine asylum seekers on these boats but we won't know if we just turn them back, will we?
I suppose at least this policy is congruent with the one which suppresses the reporting of new boat arrivals.
