I think it will deter some of the economic migrants fro coming if they are safe but just seeking a better life. But those who really are seeking safety, they won't care where they are, as long as they are safe.
Most people would also like to have a life, they want stable environment for their kids with the possibility of good education, and therefore secure future. Looking at your sigie, I am surprised you do not understand that.
I do understand that.
But to seek assylum is to seek safety. Once they are safe, then they can look to a better life. The first priority is safety. That is assylum. The rest happens once they are safe.

Out of all of those, I'm certain that at least some of them are genuine.
I am sure that some people who are applying through the proper channels are just looking for better life. But I do NOT believe for one second that people who risk the lives of their children by coming by boats do so just because they want bit better life for them. There is a plenty of info about the dangers, people getting into these boats know very well what dangers they face.
I just wonder what would make you leave everything behind, family friends, possessions, and travel to the other side of the world, get on unseaworthy boat to get to a strange country, possibly with different religion, and often hostile population? Would you go just because there is a possibility to earn more?
That pretty much sums up my thoughts as well.
I feel confident in believing that most of those who do arrive by boat seeking assylum, are genuinely in need of help and safety. I am sure that there may be the odd opportunist who has maybe already been denied through the regular channels or fears that they may not be accepted at all as they don't meet the requiremments, but on the whole, I do believe that most are genuine and absolutely desperate.

I don't think its a case of not understanding that but rather a case of understanding what our obligations are under the Humanitarian Program (according to the Refugee Convention)

don't you kid yourselves, that a coalition government won't be seekin' to change our current agreements under the convention.

lets change our agreement to match the indonesians

Kevin Rudd indicated he would call for the Agreement to be modified to make it easier for Australia to reject refugee applications, didnt he? What were his reasons?

Eloi, what would the process be? Is it something that can be easily achieved? I'm reading that revising Australian interpretation of our obligations under the convention would not change our Migration Act??

Sorry, I just don't know anything about that and am genuinely interested.
