dear serena, when your getting beaten by a better player on the day best not to be a cow and start blaming others.
they wont overturn the umpires ruling and all you get is a reputation of being a bad sport.

it seems now another thing has been added to the things you cant do anymore.
you cant draw a cartoon of a black person having a tantrum. thats racist.

I noticed that. I've had a close look at the cartoon & also read the comments about 'why' it must be racist & the argument seems to revolve around the fact it is deemded to be making fun of a minority group, depicting her as an ape, showing her with thick lips etc.
My first impression though is that the cartoon, although not flattering, is instantly recognisable as Serena Williams. It's a caricature, but then, so are most cartoons.
She is shown as black, she is shown with curly hair, solid build. But then, if she wasn't shown as those things, we wouldn't recognise who was in the cartoon.
I don't believe she looks ape like or that was ever the intention of the cartoonist.
I don't believe the subject of the cartoon is about her colour at all or about being in a 'minority' group. To me, she is part of a minority all right but more the minority of wealthy, top sports people who are famous. The cartoon is about her temper. The dummy in the cartoon is depicting her 'spitting the dummy'.
Probably the only 'racist' (if you would call it that) thing in the cartoon is the depiction of her opponent, a blonde girl in a pony tail. It would have been more relevant to show her as Japanese.
It is getting to the stage where it's only okay to be critical of mainstream white culture but heaven help you if you make a comment about anyone else who happens to be a different race or religion.

i see a common way for cartoonists to show japanese girls looks nothing like a real japanese girl, is it also racist?

No, it's not.
But I would have thought in Knight's cartoon, the winner would have been shown more true to life, so to speak.
I don't believe the portrait of serena was meant as a racist statement at all though. It was about her temper tantrum & nothing else.

I think Serena got her wish- everyone is talking about her and not the person who won the US Open and gave her a tennis thrashing. I also wonder the re-action if she was deplicted as a white person and only facial features to identify her?

I actually think that the cartoon said exactly as it was. Serena, large loud (therefore the large pen mouth) aggressive black woman, making it all about herself, throwing a tantrum and generally behaving in absolutely disgusting way, and Naomi Osaka being totally pushed out of sight. It should have been Naomi's big day and instead we are all taking only about Serena.
Naomi is only half Japanese; not sure who is her other parent

"Naomi is only half Japanese"
Which half of her is Japanese?
What nationality is her other "half"?
Is that anything like a blonde, blue eyed, self-identifying aboriginal person being only half (or other percentage) aboriginal?
Just wondering.

Naomi has a Japanese mother and a Haitian father who is very dark.
She has dual nationality.....Japanese and American.
I am surprised that there was no outcry at her being depicted as a blond white girl.
