we are 28th in the world in internet speed :(

And we can only hope that the LNP will change their minds, will listen to reason and implement the NBN.

So show us some references and not UTube nonsense.  I think  that  "your" 28th is quite fair considering that we do not have a NBN, yet!

"the drop could have been the result of our regional neighbours getting broadband at a faster rate than we are."

The above is  to be expected   with the snail-pace roll-out of the current NBN

Australia's land-mass is also overlooked when it comes to discussing the country's comparative internet speeds.

(just 4.1 per cent of Aussie internet users were downloading content at speeds greater than 10 megabits per second - the speed required to stream 720p high-definition movies.)

So what speed do you want, and what will you use it for?

Hello Underbat,

The above link (last updated 2009) doesn't really give board usage guidelines as far as I can see .Is it perhaps possible for you or someone within the au moderation team to update/or request an update of the about link ..perhaps with the board usage guidelines your team was given by ebay ?

If you view eBay USA you may note the differences and need for an update of the au link ?

all of the links within the link have up to date information too...on things like posting adult material, racially offensive material etc etc

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/everyone-boards.html

within that link is

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/member-created-content-ov.html

Why does eBay have this policy?

eBay provides the community content areas of the site to promote community interaction by giving members the opportunity to express their individual views and share helpful information. When publishing content, especially individual commentary or opinion, it's important for members of the community to respect each other as human beings and follow societal norms. Content that contains or promotes hate, illegal acts, violence, or racial intolerance (or organizations dedicated to such notions) has no place in the eBay community and is prohibited.

I meant to say that within that link are our Community Values. These came to mind when I read your post

eBay is a community that encourages open and honest communication among all its members.

Our community is guided by five fundamental values:

  • We believe people are basically good.

  • We believe everyone has something to contribute.

  • We believe that an honest, open environment can bring out the best in people.

  • We recognise and respect everyone as a unique individual.

  • We encourage you to treat others the way you want to be treated.

eBay is firmly committed to these principles. And we believe that community members should also honour them—whether buying, selling, or chatting with eBay friends.

So you think that spending Billions is a status thing, to see who can be the top of the heap.

Keeping up with the Joneses has gotten many a person or country into heaps of hot water financially.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

OOOOOps, my article was wrong, according to the up to date reasearch we are actually 49th!!!!  Yes, just under Mongolia and under just about every slightly developed country, and TA is making sure we stay that way.  😞

Re: we are 28th in the world in internet speed :(

FTTN will be double the world average,

And if you do your research you will find that the Internet data transfer rate is limited  by the slowest link in the chain from source to destination.

As most content originates off shore, regardless what speed the local Internet is, it will be limited by the route it takes.

Off shore content may have to traverse links in countries that have a very slow data transfer rate.

Also may I bring to your attention that those average figures are for source to destination that are around 300 miles apart.

I would be beneficial for a person who wants to contribute to these discussions to do some background research on the subject 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

SN :"according to the up to date reasearch we are actually 49th!!!! " So show us  the link.

FN: "There is a difference in being quizzed and being attacked with made up information by a person making guesses based on assumption alone and by default implying I am telling lies."

FN, Saying I do not believe you does mean you are a liar, only you have not supported your argument sufficiently to convince me,  as in law an honestly held opinion is a defence to  libel.  So you now have the chance to support what you write, so please explain:

1. made up information

2. making guesses based on assumption alone

3. ficticious figures

FN: "I will not disclose my details or the details of the businesses in my areal."
I do not think anyone is the slightest bit interested in any of the above FN, I just wish to know what speed you actually need, and what you have. It is hardly "eyes only" information .

Re: we are 28th in the world in internet speed :(

Just to illustrate the route that source to destination connections take over the Internet. as you can see by the response time the link access time varies between nodes an all those times are additive.

That route is only to Melbourne, now imagine a connection to say eBay in Canada, many many more nodes.

If just one of the links is limited to 1Mbps it would not help if yo had a 1 Terabit bit per second Internet connection, you would have your data served up ai 1Mbps

Once you can visualize how it all fits together you may be better informed and less likely to be conned  🙂
