yes, you would need to put a stick on them but they grow like mad and don't die just because it's 47 degrees for a week or so.

there are beautiful trees out there but it's heartbreaking to see them die, especially if you are over 50 and don't have 20 years time to wait for a tree to grow up or keep trying on a certain tree for 5 years.

i am recommending plants that grow well and fast in WA climate and aren't suicidal. like correas in the desert....

A couple of comments -

Magnolia trees DO grow (and flower) extremely well in Australia in the temperate and cold zones. And I mean all varieties - pink flowered small tree (soulangeana) and the HUGE tree with white flowers (grandiflora).  Whilst I wouldn't recommend grandiflora unless you are on property big enough to take a 30m tree, the soulangeana is very quick growing, but deciduous so will drop leaves.

Secondly - the beautiful  willow like Peppercorn Trees are NOT a registered noxious weed in Australia. Wrong tree - you are thinking about the Broad leaf Pepper Tree (ugly anyway) which  is a Class 3 weed but it is not the same tree. Regardless, Peppercorn Trees are not recommended near waterways as they will spread like willows do. But if they are away from waterways or in a backyard they are the perfect fast growing shade tree. They don't drop limbs but they will drop leaves heavily in strong heat. But the leaves are so fine it isn't an issue. They are fabulous trees.

Another good tree that is fast growing is the Coral Gum. But you would want to plant that away from your house particularly if you are in a bushfire prone area. Same with any Eucalyptus trees or shrubs.
