Interesting that none of the right-wing Trump supporters had the courage of their convictions prejudices. Says something about radicals.

In some parts of the U.S.A (and Queensland), it's still the 15th century.

They sound like very BIASED comments from folk who aren't great fans of the USA ............... If it was so bad, what  did they bother to keep watching it?

All comments about the inauguration or about performances will just be matters of opinion, that's a given.

In the comments I copied, the first one was by someone whose opinion I respect, he worked for several decades in the royal household and he would be used to pageantry and ceremony. I could be wrong here, but I think the English tendency is possibly more understated and formal, so over the top sentimentality or passion could jarr, why they would find it tacky.

The reactions aren't necessarily because the people don't like the USA. I think it could be a cultural bias.

That's why i asked how people here found it. I'm intersted to see if we sway more towards the English cultural side or the American.

I didnt find it "woeful" at all, quite the opposite ................ perhaps you watched/listened a different rendition to me?

The thing is, the version I heard probably wasn't from the actual ceremony. I wasn't watching the TV so I don't know exactly where it was from, but it was possibly the worst version I have ever heard. Again, only a matter of opinion, but whoever sang the version i heard was a woman, going slowly, pausing too long, basically butchering what normally isn't a bad tune.

Just reading facebook, the overwhelming reaction though amongst my English friends is the ceremony was dreadful. The American friends though are raving about it.

These are some of the comments from the English side:

Am I alone in finding Presidential Inaugurations, with their mix of religious preaching, over the top patriotism and and the apparent desire of speakers to so outdo each other in passion that they will be remembered as the star of the show, so tacky that is is like wading through spilt molasses?

I was lucky enough to have missed Lady Gaga, but unlucky enough to hear yet another singer anxious that their version of that much abused Hymn 'Amazing Grace' should be the one that is most remembered with a shudder!

Pomp and ceremony, we are the experts!

I thought it was a case of one-upmanship from start to finish. Even with the restrictions brought about by the pandemic it lost its gravitas for me. Whilst I wish Joe all the best for the future, he reminded me of me trying to impress my granddaughters at a family wedding by attempting to dance like John Travolta. It was embarrassing for all concerned. Just my thoughts.

For those of you who did see it, are the comments fair or not?

fair enough as personal opinions and hopefully not read over the pond - Americans hate foreigner critique of their ways
