Crikey made valid, accurate points.

Singling out the Catholic Church when independent schools are receving similar amounts based on no. of schools they run... what do you call that - abalanced discussion?

What are your reasons for singling them out?

Catholic School fees are much lower than most independent school fees as well, and they take a % of non-Catholic students.

My brothers children went to Catholic schools (they are Protestant), because their parents didn't like the public schools available to them. The never go indoctrinated into the Catholic religion.

I think also Catholic Schools (apart from those at the very top end of the market) charge far lower fees and serve a far wider demographic than other private schools.

If funding was withdrawn it is not the elite schools that would suffer, but the small local ones; and as Az said, if they didn't exist, the government would have to find and fund places for all the students currently attending them - which would work out a lot more expensive than the current subsidies.

Crikey was providing facts - accurate facts.

Can you give some examples of outrageous Catholic School fees compared to other independent school fees?

When my youngest was in YR12 a four years ago at an Anglican school the fees were around $15 000 p.a.

There is a Catholic primary school where I live. I know non-Catholics that send their children there, they are on low to mid incomes.

If they don't pay tax then for starters what do you call the gst they pay on items? Of course they pay tax, what a stupid and biased accusation to make.

The parents of children in Catholic schools work and pay taxes, so why shouldn't they get some of that back via gov't funding in their kids schools?

Also are you talking about Federal funding or State funding? Both contribute to all forms of education be it public or private in varying degrees.

This is what the OP is referring to:

Under the proposed Gonski funding reforms, public schools will receive an extra $12 billion.

....But what does the 319-page Gonski report on school funding actually say?
Catholic schools will get an extra $1.5 billion and independent schools an extra $1 billion.

Cuts to University funding are going to be made to fund the above
