LATCH - “Oops, must’ve left the latch loose,” wailed Ramona as she and Chang helped to get the dogs inside, and Grace waved a hand to dignify it was fine, murmuring “Just as well your neighbours aren’t here to see it, I suppose, and I’m just glad that even though it’s just a large property, Rufus and Bailey came when I called!”

ECCENTRIC - Along the way, Bailey barked lightly at a possum in a tree, at a large German Shepherd being walked by the eccentric man at number 22 whose name she couldn’t remember, at a white cat who’d been licking its paws, and at two children riding bicycles - all in fun, as one might say, but Rufus wasn’t having it, as he uttered little growls to correct his companion, and once even cuffed him to bring him into line!

GREEN - The storm had also unearthed a well-chewed tennis ball that had once been green but was now an indeterminate colour illustrating a year or more of Rufus’s delight in fetching it, finding it, and getting his teeth into it.

ETIQUETTE - When Rufus tried to hoard his tennis ball finds, standing off with Bailey like the knight who said “None shall pass”, Grace put down her work and hurried out, saying firmly, “Rufus! What have you been taught about the etiquette of sharing? Let Bailey play with the tennis balls!”, and was pleased when Rufus gave her a sheepish expression and wagged his tail with a renewed spirit of generosity towards the expectant Bailey.

GEISHA - Grace put on a recording of “Madama Butterfly” after dinner, and as she felt tears trickle down her cheeks at the glorious music telling the sad story of the heroine whose marriage to an American naval officer was just his ruthless ploy to enjoy her like a temporary geisha, Rufus and Bailey made concerned snuffling noises and surrounded her with comforting head-butts and licks.
