TEMPO - As she drove down the darkness-drenched street where most of the street lamps had failed, she peered out through her window to call “Rufus! Rufus!” in a tearful tempo of increasing desperation, until she approached the next street lamp that bathed the night with a milky glow and illuminated - oh, thankfully! - a miserable-looking little dog on the nature strip.

DELIGHTED - Little Rufus was so delighted to hear his mum`s cries that he raced so fast to greet her that he ran straight into a huge puddle wetting her beautiful dress......... oh no!

DIRT - The hollow in the road cupped the rainwater so that Rufus’ tempestuous dash gave his owner quite a drenching, and she let out an involuntary “Oh!” of dismay as the skirt of her dress was splashed, but her voice was rueful as she caught Rufus on her lap and stroked his bedraggled little head and ears, aware of the dirt his paws had bestowed upon her - and “Ah well,” she murmured, “it’ll wash out, and at least I’ve found you, you darling little rascal.”

TICKLISH - When Rufus and his relieved owner arrived home, she gave him a nice warm bath, and a good brushing to bring a shine to his tangled coat, which made him squirm as his tummy was rather ticklish.

HEATER - Rufus was filled with doggy delight at being fed his favourite food, petted in just the spot behind his ears which he couldn’t reach himself, and coaxed to lie on his dog bed in front of the heater while he lovingly licked his owner’s knee.
