The Ups and Downs of Synonyms (New Game)

I hope this new game will be fun...

In this new game, you have to select a word from the sentence of the previous poster and write a new sentence with a synonym of that word that is either longer or shorter than the original word.

The next poster then chooses a new word from your sentence, selects a synonym of that word that is either longer or shorter and writes a new sentence, and so on.

For example:

- She liked to spend a lot of time at the library, reading old books and pondering about life.

The next poster chooses a word, for example old, and a synonym of a different length, for example elderly, and then writes a new sentence.

- He visited his elderly brother in his tiny apartment and listened to some nice, relaxing music with him.

And so on...

- When she entered the shop that seemed to have magically appeared overnight, she had a strange feeling of déjà vu, even if she was sure she had never seen it before, let alone entered it.

SHARP - Cathy winced; although most of the choristers were very tuneful, there was that one terrible shrill voice again, always singing out-of-tune when it came to that final section in the Bach chorale.

TERRIBLE - She hated reading the news, seeing all the awful things happening around the world, and especially hearing about people harming others, and wished she could see more happy stories.

HAPPY - Whatsoever is able to lift the heart, let us grasp; whatsoever makes us joyful, let us pursue; all other things being equal in that our pursuits bless our soul and do not deprave our very self.

PURSUE - If we were all to leave our everyday existences to chase our dreams, there would be no one left to tend to the mundane chores and essential requirements of our everyday lives, so maybe we should just potter along and keep dreaming.

POTTER - The skilled hands of the ceramicist shaped the clay with sweeping curves and lovely design while the apprentice looked on admiringly.

APPRENTICE - The head chef was continually annoyed by the apparent incompetence of the new trainee who the owner had hired for their attractive looks rather than their cooking skills.

HEAD - The young police constable swallowed hard as the SOCO team worked carefully to remove the last remaining pieces of the torso from the burial site, to join the skull where it lay, grimly coated with viscous mud, on the stretcher with its body bag.

STRETCHER - After the long trek through the wilderness, the basic camp bed provided a level of comfort seldom felt when resting on his top-of-the-range mattress.
