I'm not surprised they require you to pay postage to send a parcel

Did the seller agree to the return?

Was what they sent not what your ordered?

(Was it an item not as described, or did you order the wrong size?)

If you ordered the wrong size, did the seller accept change of mind returns?

If a parcel is opened, then if you want to return it AusPost will want money - regardless of whether it is your fault or the seller's fault. If it is the seller's fault though you should open a return request and ask the seller to send you a label which will allow you to send the parcel back without paying yourself (the seller will pay). But if it is your fault you will have to pay yourself.

The only way to send a parcel back for free is when you don't accept it, in which case you should not open it either of course.
