I have a question here. Iwas idding on 2 similar wireless adapters on seprate tabs and accidentally commited to buy them both. I've been trying to have the seller on the item I idn't want to buy cancel the transaction, but he's not replying to my mesages and has filed a case for non-payment with Ebay. What are the consequnces if I don't pay for the item? As I don't need two of the same item here and didn't mean to buy virtually identical items.

Given it's a two-step process, it's hardly an accident. Were you bidding, or were they Buy It Nows. If auctions, then bidding on 2 identical items is definitely not an accident.
Provided you don't renege on another purchase in the next (or previous) 12 months, there are no consequences except that the seller of the item you don't want is highly unlikely to allow you to 'purchase' from them again.

The seller is under no obligation to cancel, or reply to messages asking them to do so,especially when ,as mentioned,it is not possible to accidentally commit to buy
They are are also very well within their rights to open a non payment dispute
The seller has already been charged fees for the sale plus potentially lost a real customer and has to wait to be able to resist the item
If you have no use for two items, you could always sell the second one yourself once it arrives

It wa a buy it now. And I had mutiple tabs open in Ebay at the time as I was trying to make sure that the item suited my computer. I pressed Buy it Now on the wrong item. I was stupid at the time, but the only other option that I see it that I buy it then return it to the seller.

You do have other options.
As has been suggested you could list the item & experience the joy of dealing with troublesome buyers.
You could donate the item.
You could keep the item & display it in a prominent location as a reminder to be more careful in the future.
