Excess postage costs

Hi, I just received an item I won on auction. At time of payment I was charged $8.50 postage. On arrival of my parcel it was post marked $1.80, a differences of $6.70. Additional the envelope was used, turned inside out and stapled and taped back together. The garment inside was placed in crumpled used 'parcel post' bag.
I have contacted the seller (politely) and she maintains that the postage cost is part of the overall item cost (even thought I won this through auction). Am I being unreasonable about my complaint or am I due a refund?
Help please !!!

This is one my greatest hates, people who just pluck a figure out of the air to charge for postage.

Postage costs are not an overall cost of the item being bid on, it is the way to get the item to the buyer. I have this argument all the time with sellers who will not check the correct postage cost. Some sellers have even cancelled the item just because i asked to check the postage cost.

An example, i asked why an item sent from Sydney to Canberra would cost one seller 15 bucks and anothe seller selling a similar item, size and weight, should cost 30 bucks. The other thing is this, the seller must be made aware that they are selling to a customer, not just a nameless person. You wouldnt put up with **bleep** sales service from a retail outlet, why would you do it here.
