having sold an item, it says the payment has been made but I cannot find it.

Purchaser says he paid with Mastercard and ebay says it has been processed but I can find no record of it in paypal or my bank account. It is a largish sum so I need to track it down

Are the funds on hold in your paypal account or ebay managed payments.  As a new seller your funds are subject to a 21 day holding period.

What does your Payment page show?

If 'processing' it is being processed. If eBay have told you to send you will need to send, otherwise your eBay selling journey will be short.
