To send or not to send - an invoice?

When an auction is over and you have sold an item to the highest bidder, is it polite to wait for the person to choose their payment method to pay you or is it best to use the send invoice option as soon as auction is done? We are new to this and not yet a business.

Send the invoice straight away if they have not all ready done check out.

When they do checkout that is when they pick the payment option.
