Hi, I have a question. I sold an item 4 days ago, it was won on a last minute bid, I have had no contact from buyer, and no payment received. This morning, I sent a friendly reminder, stating it had been 4 days and if there is a problem with paying to let me know and we can work something out. I got an almost instant reply, stating "Sorry have had a death in the immediate family so this is the last thing on my mind atm".
If it is the last thing on their mind, why are they on eBay, replying to my email within 10 minutes of me sending mine. If they have to time to respond to eBay emails, why not just pay while on there. Not sure if this is an excuse or for real, I did reply with "So sorry for your loss". Should I be sceptical, which I am not usually, but seems strange, or should I give them time, and how much time?. Need some advise how to handle this.

What are the odds of a sudden death in the immediate family in the first 48 hours after winning an item? Probably about the same chance of me winning lotto both in Aus and the UK on the same day;-)
If it was after the 48 hours they would already have received an ebay reminder to pay and should have done so lol.
I would open the dispute and tell them you will not close it until after Thursday but if payment isn't received then you will have to act in order to get your fvf refunded.

It's possible your messages, OP, are going directly to her mobile device, so that could explain how she's replying in a timely manner.
All of my eBay notifications come straight to mine so I am able to respond quickly too, even if I'm not in front of my PC or Laptop.

Can you not pay using Paypal via your mobile phone?I thought there was an app.

No, you can Foxy. You don't even need the PayPal app. You can pay through the eBay app.
I just was commenting as to perhaps why the buyer can/is responding so quickly.
Personally, I think she's full of it & I would be opening a dispute.

Last night I received a request to cancel a purchase. The buyer blamed her 3 year old for using BIN. 😮 Early this afternoon it was time to open a dispute so I did. Nearly an hour later she emailed me again and asked why I opened the dispute. She wasn't happy with my reply and said she was in hospital all week and came home last night and started abusing me. I told her I couldn't be sure if she was telling the truth so she abused me again in her last email. She has since paid for the $14.00 item and has assured me she will leave feedback. I wonder if I'll need to ask ebay to remove it. To me she is just another whacko. From what I can work out according to her I am in the wrong not her......

DV, every single time I have to open a dispute for a non payer, they get pissy at me. Like your buyer, they abuse me for opening it.
Well, pay or contact me then 😐
PJ says she has no trouble with any of her buyers when she opens disputes. I wish I had her luck :_|

Thanks for all the responses, I have decided to give her benefit of the doubt, I am still within the time period for a NPD next Thursday. I have a feeling though I will be still be waiting payment on Friday, so Thursday night I will open case if not paid, as she did say she wold pay Thursday at latest, just so I don't come across as heartless, in case she is telling truth.

I rarely need to deal with a non payer dot com but they usually don't communicate and I can open and close a dispute without a problem.
I wonder if PJ's non payers are concerned about being threatened with this;
Concrete shoes
Cyanide, TNT!
Done dirt cheap!
Neckties, contracts,
High voltage!

LOL, PJ doesn't engage in dialogue with non payers, they get an invoice on day 3 with a note asking for details of their payment as I have been unable to trace it and unfortunately if I do not hear from them within 24 hours I will have to open an unpaid item dispute in order to recover my final value fees and relist.
9 times out of 10 they pay after receiving the invoice and those who don't probably were never going to pay anyway so I just close it after 4 days.
As all my communication has been businesslike and unemotional there is no reason a buyer should feel threatened, if a buyer comes up with the hospital, dying relative, small child or the cat did it excuse I just ignore it. I would never accuse them of lying or anything else, just stick to the facts and if they do pay I post their item off with tracking and a little note thanking them SO much for making their payment and hoping they are pleased with their purchase.
What I really think of them is not for publication;-)
