Australia Post - have they lost the plot?

The latest increase in postage costs has prompted this post.

Australia Post is currently losing around $70m a year, largely apparently because of the costs incurred for delivering items which arrive from overseas (as a result of some sort of international postage treaty agreement and probably also as a result of various free trade agreements).

I actually don't have a real problem with any of this in theory  - but I DO have a big problem with the way it is implemented, especially as it seems that the latest round of price (and more importantly) policy adjustments (eg the apparent extension of cubing to items weighing under 500g) to DOMESTIC costs are driven to a large extent by the need to recover this loss.

If Government (or its utilities) agree to international treaties that should - and usually is - a cost born by government through general taxes.

Except - apparently - postage. Here the Australian user pays not only for their own costs of postage but is also paying for the costs of imported items.

My view is that if there are treaties we have entered into that increase costs to AP then these need to be excluded from any domestic costings ... as these are intergovernmental agreements that's a government cost.

And if you want to get an idea of just how much Oz Post is straying from its core business go to their home page. What you'll see is a picture of Halong Bay (just over the border from China) and a promo for buying international money cards.

Silly me .. I thought Australia Post's prime business was the delivery of letters and parcels.

well I have been following the posts very closely - but I cannot see any announcement from Australia Post that says cubing is now compulsory for ordinary people - perhaps you can show me the link.

you are correct... as I do not see any where where it says subject to cubing..

BUT if you look at there calculator. and conditions they say cubing still applies.. so the question I am trying to find out will cubbing disappear after the 8th April.. Cannot seem to get an answer from AP.

valdoe - Check out this link:-

http://auspost.com.au/media/documents/rates-determination-nov2012.pdf

Specifically the following:-

For parcels over 1 kg that are square or rectangular in shape, Australia Post will assess charges according to their actual weight or cubic weight equivalent, whichever is greater. The cubic weight is the parcel’s volume in cubic metres multiplied by 250. Australia Post reserves the right to also apply cubic charges to a parcel weighing less than 1kg, and to parcels that are irregular or cylindrical in shape.

Curranone - there is no way AP will only apply this to contract and eparcel customers as theoretically they are supposed to be rewarded with lower rates than ordinary customers due to the volume of parcels they send.  What they can do with eparcel and contract customers is directly bill their accounts if a parcel goes through which has the incorrect postage paid.

The last thing AP will want is for all the eparcel and contract customers to cancel their contracts and start lining up at the local post offices in order to get cheaper rates - it would cause chaos.

Thank you Jen - I agree, but I was referring to previous posts where eparcel customers have been advised that cubing will now be compulsory for ALL EPARCELS.

My position remains, that unless someone can point to the link, after April 8 2013 compulsory cubing for small parcels under 1 kg is not going to happen to ordinary parcels that someone lodges over the counter, which has been the rumour.

Fine. I would if I was a powerseller. God I hate people putting links to PS topics on the general boards. If we could access them, we probably would have already.

Oops so sorry;    quoted from tagnbragaus

We just got our new contract sent from AUS POST. Yup.. some slight increases for us. Nothing too horrendous that we cant deal with (so we thought)

So we ring our rep (who has been quite silent the last few months) to ask a couple of questions and we get the BOMBSHELL...........

Most of our products (from our main account) go loose in tough bags, and we have always calculated by weight.

Well NOW..... AUSPOST is going to CUBE EVERYTHING DOMESTIC.

Asked how they are going to do this, we have been told......." oh we have new machines that can work it out"

So.. even though we weight everything, they will put all parcels through their " Machines" and then send us "adjustments" each day to our manifest for any 'extra charges'.

Yes I read your link... but that is NOV 12.

Will not the new price change affect conditions in that article.

AP quote

"

The new domestic parcel range makes sending a parcel as simple as 1, 2, 3:

Choose parcel delivery speed
Same Day*, Next Day#, Regular Select parcel size
Small 500g, Medium 3kg, Large 5kg - or own packaging up to 22kg Add features
Extra Cover, Signature on Delivery, Email Track Advice, Cash on Delivery"

Then when you read their price chart  http://auspost.com.au/media/documents/april-8th-2013-parcel-post.pdf , Parcel Post  and Domestic features again there is no mention of cubing.

So being a simple user tell me they dropped cubbing.

I asked at the PO i went to today. She said it was eparcel only from what she had read. She was going to find out more info on Monday. But I think there will be lots of it here before I get back to PO. Parcels over 1kg will still be cubed for regular customers.

Wish they would listen to their customers, is been said hundreds times online, traders need a 1kg and 2kg Express Post, how do they think the couriers got to where they are, IMO Aust. Post is just missing out on millions $ in extra revenue.

Over the years I've spoken to everyone from PO counter, postmasters and mangement about this, all agree but nothing has happended yet, do they think we will pay so much more for a 3kg, nope, I use a courier for up 2kg, full tracking, signature $11.64.

I agree totally lost the plot.
