Is anyone aware if there is a "period of grace" after 4 January, where the old letter rates will be accepted without the recipient being charged for underpaid postage? In the past there has been an "unwritten period of grace", sometimes two weeks or a month.
This is the case where you drop a pre-stamped letter into a red post box. Of course once you approached the post office counter, the latest postage would be charged.
Happy New Year and thank you for all the very helpful "inside advice".

In answer to your question Joe, the answer would be NO, the rates went from 70cents to $1.00 on monday as you are well aware.
It's possible your recipient / yourself would not have to pay the excess, BUT it's a possiblity NOT a probability.

joe, simply, the grace period is intended ONLY to cover letters already in the system - NOT anything posted on or after the 4th

As previously said in the thread Joe, for letters posted before monday, yes there probably would be no penalty for having a 70cent stamp on a letter, since at that point the 70cent postage was the correct postage due.
If AP did try to penalise it's customers for the extra 30 cents there would be righteous outrage on their facebook account / call centre / media, which I'm sure they wouldn't want to be a part of .
"Edit" beat me to it MB........................

then why would you need up to 10 days grace period if letters are in the system already and picked up before the 4th
there are even posters here stating they will be using there old stamps until they run out in about a weeks time. how can that be .

Yes why would there be a grace period of upto 10 days,to me that also means posting at the old letter rate for the next 10 days will be graced upon so it should be as from the 14th Jan no more $0.70 stamps will be processed without being penalized?

I actually wrote the original post. I just wanted to know if anyone had heard if there was a period of grace, from various sources. I think everyone has answered honestly with the information they have and it is varied.
Now everyone who reads this can make their own choices. Some may have started on 4 Jan only sending letters with $1, some may only start sending with $1 in a week or two ............ personal choice. No big deal, but we are now well informed on the possibilities.

Because it can take up to 10 days for Aust Post to deliver (eg. outlying rural Qld to remote WA)
As for those stating they will be using old stamps until they run out - well sorry, but in my book that is just totally dishonest
