Buyer wants compensation instead of returning item

Hi all, I just had a buyer who claims that there's something wrong with a camera I sold and that he has been quoted $100-$150 to get it fixed. He wants a refund of between $70-$100. Instead, I asked him to initiate a return and told him I would pay for the postage and refund his money. I checked his feedback to others and there seem to be a lot of 'thanks for being reasonable and fixing the problem' posts as well as several negatives for various problems. He has told me that he is very disappointed that I will not compensate him and that he will keep the camera as it is because it is too inconvenient and he is too busy to return it. I fully expect to get negative feedback for this. Is there anything I can do?

Good idea shoppingbag*. Hopefully I won't have to use it very often!

If he has a quote for fixing it, tell him to email the quote showing the business name and address and phone number of the business

that will fix it.

I bet he won't have that.  That might call his bluff.

I bet he doesn't have it either but in this case, if i were the seller, I would stick to just insisting on the camera back and a full refund then.

The reason I suggest that and not asking for an email quote is those sorts of documents are extremely easy to fake and alter online. I have minimal computer skills and I can do it within a minute or two. So I wouldn't trust the honesty of this buyer.

Re: Buyer wants compensation instead of returning item

I had a similar experience with a 'shadowy' buyer a few years back. Absolutely nothing wrong with what I sent him, but he contacted me after the sale saying he was disappointed and wanted a refund. Just kept saying it wasn't what he was expecting but wouldn't elaborate and refused to return. I stood my ground and reiterated that he got exactly what was described in the listing and he would not be getting a refund, then waited for a neg which never arrived. I blocked him anyway after that.

When I checked his feedback left for others there was a LOT of negs, neutrals, and some positives with comments along the line of "Thank you for fixing the problem, feedback revised." I wonder how many honest sellers will immediately refund rather than go through the bother of having to organise a return paid for out of their own pocket, especially on low ticket items. Unscrupulous, super picky buyers would end up with lots of freebies this way.

Re: Buyer wants compensation instead of returning item

Come to think of it, I had a similar issue with a customer who bought, for $30, a non-working playstation 2 for parts. Specifically asked me if the fan worked before he bought it, so I tested the fan for him and it worked.

After he got it, he sent a message with a photo of a fan not working and demanded a refund. Told him to send the unit back and he claimed that he had just gone overseas. last message from him said "just give me my effing money".

Haven't heard from him since.

Re: Buyer wants compensation instead of returning item

i think on american ebay buyers are entitled to compensation for example- i bought an item and it didn't completely work causing me stress so thus i am going to claim compensation for that stress- i think under the yank system they are entitled to this

Re: Buyer wants compensation instead of returning item

I don't believe this! I blocked the buyer from bidding on any of my other sales. So, I just sold another camera and had the same response from the bayer – the exact same 'problem' of the selector wheel not working and asking for a $200-$300 discount. Now this is an easy problem to fake, you can stop the wheel from working in the menu settings. This email wasn't as polite as the previous one but was also accompanied by an online video showing the problem – from the same internet account. So, different account names but the same buyer, and the same scam. I reported him to eBay and they're looking into it. Apparently that person has several linked accounts and it's going to their fraud team for investigation. I'll add the new account to my BBL but there's no guarantee that this this is the last time I'll encounter this buyer. He obviously has so many scams going he doesn't remember that he's already tried it on me before. Unbelievable!

it is a breach of eBay policy to use a second, or subsequent, account to get around a seller’s block.

Any time the same named buyer, or same PayPal account buyer, buys an item you just contact eBay and tell them the buyer is trying to get around your buyer block.

Doesn’t matter how many accounts they use or try to use, if you can show it is the same Blocked buyer you do not have to send the item.

I had a case like this a few years ago where the buyer had multiple accounts with very similarly themed user ID's, all from the same small hamlet in Tas (each ID referenced cats in some way or another).

If you take this to a knowledgable CS, they will be able to work out a complete list for you.

In my case it was about 6 different ID's and there were 2 that I wasn't aware of.

I then added all to my BBL.
