In December 2009, eBay conducted a survey among the top 3,000 sellers on eBay.com.au.

The results of the survey have been compiled into a new publication, the Online Business Index launched today.

Two key findings from the Online Business Index include:
• 67% of those surveyed were optimistic about their 12 month business outlook with 38% expecting to increase staffing levels during the period
• sellers use an average of 2.5 sales channels (such as eBay, traditional bricks and mortar, their own website etc) with eBay accounting for 63% of all sales on average

The Online Business Index also asked respondents how the government can further assist with the development of the burgeoning sector. The results and report including case studies are well worth checking out.

Re: Check out the new Australian Online Business Index

Only 454 "Top Sellers"actually replied! And if I was making $6.4 Million I would be pretty optimistic too. See extract below or clink on the link in OP to read entire article

"The Online Business Index is a major new survey of Australian businesses engaged in ecommerce. It has been compiled using survey responses from 454 of eBay.com.au’s top sellers, whose annual turnover ranges from $60,000 to $6.4 million.

The survey was sent to eBay.com.au’s top 3,000 sellers by sales volume and was conducted by market researchers Stokes Mischewski between 7 December 2009 and 11 January 2010 using seller information provided by eBay.

The sample on which the index is based represents online businesses of different sizes from around Australia with varying relationships to eBay.

Of the 454 sellers who responded to the survey, 273 of the top 1,500 sellers had sales ranging from $108,977 to $6,421,412 and 181 of the next 1,500 sellers had sales ranging from $60,892 to $108,959."

I wonder how many of these sellers actually make a living out of it.

It would sound better if if it was stated how much profit was made rather then amount of sales.

If the seller relies on a small profit margin it would mean they would have to have very high sales to make a living out of it.

On $200.000 in sale at a 10% profit margin is still only $20.000

So they would need to sell double that just to make a living out of it.

This thread should be removed.

It is only rubbing it in the noses of all struggling sellers here on ebay.

What a slap in the face.

This thread should be removed.

to the ebay news board, which is the appropriate place. But probably not put there, because it is as quiet as a grave yard.

Perhaps Daniel's thread should be reported for being on the wrong forum. B-)
