Can I creat a postage rule where if a buyer buys 2 different items from my store they get a postage discount?
But if they buy 2 of the same item the postage is calculated as I have entered it into the item ie each additional item has a certain cost

If you mean what I think you mean, the simple answer is unfortunately no - as soon as you create postage rules and apply them to listings, they take precedence over the 'per additional item' quotes (the heirarchy is basically Promotional postage (takes precendence over all rules) > Flat / Calculated postage discount rules > individual (additional) item rules. The only way individual item quotes for each extra one purchased would work would be if the total P&H for two is less than what it would be under the posage rules (which is impossible unless using a promotional postage rule, because you can set those to require a minimum order quantity / value), and no other iems were purchased, either.
A lot of the time, I read my posts re: postage rules back and wonder if I actually made anything better or worse by attempting o explain so if I've confused things even more, let me know and I'll try to clarify.

Thanks for your answer, but I'm still not exactly sure that this will work? I already have an insert which is a link to my eBay store, is that the sort of thing you mean?
I've tried using a postage rule but it doesnt really work the way we want it to, so we've gone back to asking buyers to request an invoice if they buy a number of different products.

Thanks, that made sense. So would the way we have it set up that they request an invoice be the best way?

I'm afraid so - I know it's a fairly cumbersome way to do it.
