Don't accept Paypal for pick up

Good article turned up on in the Guardian today:

http://www.theguardian.com/money/2014/aug/09/paypal-buyer-protection-ebay-fraud

Basically huge scam where buyers insist on paying with Paypal, pick up the item, and the account is then flagged as fraudulent by Paypal so they take the money back from the seller.  Seller loses money and item as they can't prove delivery for Seller Protection.  I know it's been discussed before here, thought this was a good snippet to pass on to make more people aware.

that's eBay UK   different rules apply on ebay aussie

1. sellers of cars do NOT have to even offer paypal on ebay motors

2. it has been the rule for a cpl of years now that paypal offers no Buyer or Seller protection for pick up items

and most aussie sellers know that.

ebay n/paypal UK obviously havent caught up with us yet

I knew that about automotive, it's hard in a post to put in every caveat "i know that..  but....."

Despite being a UK article (I knew that too) I think the principle still stands for alot of other categories here. It's pretty hard for someone to initiate a chargeback if they've paid cash.

The point is that not all sellers might know the details of seller protection in this way, I was just giving a heads up, especially for newbies.

If the article is totally incorrect for Paypal Australia, then my very sincere apologies, I didn't mean to confuse people.

Don't worry Black*poppy ... some members who dominate these boards are not that smart, but think they are, and use statements like

.

"most aussie sellers know that"

.

and also seem to take pleasure in putting other members' posts "down"

.

There are new members who join everyday and need to be warned about the perils of ebay/paypal ...

.

So your advice is appreciated

.

And, of course, it does not just apply to cars ... it applies to all pick-ups

.

Pick-up is always ... cash only

.

Thank you for your advice and concern for other members of the ebay community

.

.

It is not over until the fat lady (and her cohorts) have posted

It is no different here for any pick ups of any purchase. Although the Paypal seller and buyer protection policy doesn't apply to pick ups it doesn't stop credit card chargebacks through the bank for unauthorised use of a credit card.

Situations like this have happened in Australia before and there is no doubt they will happen again.

As Jens says it is no different in Aus than in the UK. There is no buyer protection for a pick up item however there is no seller protection against a bank chargeback either. While sellers cannot refuse to accept Paypal if it is offered they can go a long way to protecting themselves by asking for photo id containng the buyer's address which they should photocopy and add to a receipt, a copy for the buyer and one for them. They should also note the rego number of the car/van. If they do that and the buyer has made use of somebody else's credit card then you have more than enough evidence to report them to the police for fraud.

I get it sometimes. The buyer just pays as soon as the auction finishes. I tend to frown upon it especially with low priced items but what can you do, you can't refuse to accept it for any item except cars and real estate. You just have to cover yourself. 1. Compose a collection receipt, upon pickup the buyer signs and dates the receipt which the seller keeps. 2. Take a scan or photocopy of the drivers licence (I do this for high value items over $100 or so) 3. Take down rego details of the vehicle they drive to pick items up. At least with a rego number the Police can get involved. 4. Allow at least 7 days to elapse before allowing pickups. As soon as a buyer pays for a pick up only item, I inform them of the requirements. Most buyers are ok with it. Some apologise and ask for their payment to be reversed so they can pay cash on pickup. A signed declaration along with all that other info should be enough to cover you with seller protection in the event of a problem.
