Such an incisive reponse, given that fees and many rules have changed since this thread was relevant. I am impressed that you bothered to read at least some of the responses, most of which would still be relevant, although non-specific to the times.
Like reading rules and not shouting. As you weren't registered until SEVEN YEARS after the thread was current, your comment is neither productive, relevant or timely. If the thread had been started yesterday, the same would apply.

I doubt the member you're responding to will be able to reply for a day or so (TEP IYKWIM).

Insane seller fees. I sold my laptop for $1300 and copped $180 fees. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS 🧐😱 Unfortunately for the buyer I cancelled once I became aware of this. I will sell elsewhere. Absolutely crazy. I am actually going to close my eBay account in protest. It's very shifty that they don't make the fees obvious when you create a listing - only once you put in a complaint do they refer you to the fees page, which was impossible to find beforehand. I was expecting fees of $20 - $30. But $180... Oh my. eBay is going to die the death they deserve.

I totally agree.
Why should a new seller think that searching for 'seller fees' is expected? After all in a nanny state your thinking is done for you.
As far as your unfounded expectation of what the fees would be, you know what thought did...

Sell on Gumtree or Car Sales

A laptop on Carsales?
When Oztion was a go, before Carsales bought it for the software and killed it, maybe. Not now.

Oh my, it must be quite a while since you tried advertising anywhere. Even one line in a newspaper will set you back about $50.
You may well be able to sell on one of the free sites such as facebook marketplace or their local selling groups, or gumtree, but whether you'll easily get offers of $1300 for your laptop is another thing. You may, but if your experience on those is anything like mine, you'll get plenty of 'customers' sending through messages such as '$300 and I will pick up today'.
I was intrigued by your claim it was almost impossible to find a list of the fees beforehand. I am regularly on these boards but haven't sold in years so have not had to look them up in a very long while. I decided it would be a valid test if I tried to find them to see how difficult it was. I am not computer guru so if it hard for most people, it will be hard for me.
I opened at the home page, wondering where to start. Then I ran my eyes across the top and saw drop down menus that included Sell/watchlist/my ebay on the right hand side (I am on a computer at the moment).
I clicked on sell, then when that opened on FAQ and the first category there was -How much does it cost to sell? with a blue clickable link that outlined the fees.
There are probably other ways to get to that information but I didn't find it too hard to find and it would always be worthwhile working out approximate fees before listing.
One thing to remember: You'll only pay the selling fees if you sell.
While some other sites are free, you'll pay extra if you want your ad to be highlighted or stay near the top and depending on what you are selling, some sites will charge a fee whether you sell or not.
All things to weigh up-fees, ad exposure, prices you are likely to achieve on that site etc

Imagine what the OP would think about the fees now - 10 years later LOL

Seems like you paid 2% fees on the first one and 8% fees on the second. Have a little pity for me then as I paid 13.4% fees on my items in April. Overall between eBay and Paypal my total fees have been just under 20%.

If you are replying to the OP then maybe you missed the date of that post almost 10 years ago.
How is it possible for your fees in April to have been just under 20% ? Under Managed payments the eBay fee is now 13.4% and there are no PayPal fees for sellers. If a buyer pays by PayPal the funds go to eBay, which is why eBay fees rose by 2.5% with MP.
