You probably should have.
But unless the postage was over $40, you were always going to lose money.
Maybe you should read the Selling FAQs, or not assume that eBay is not a non-profit organisation.

never start an auction at 99c.....start an auction with the price that you are willing to accept....regardless of what ebay might tell you....we've all learnt this lesson

So basically honest sellers are being punished for idiots who not only mess up the pricing average on sold items but cheat the system. eBay should have an algorythm to stop doofus sellers from undervaluing items. NO item should be at 99 cents ever. Its rediculous. I actually got notice from eBay that I would have better luck if I lowered my already too low price on an item. Why do I have to act like my store is a garage sale because yokels do it and mess up eBay for all sellers? The almost 11% final fee on item sale price and postage is a joke.

Eight years on???
It's ridiculous, btw. And not something that eBay is likely to change, given they haven't in the last EIGHT years.
Your responses to eBay suggestions are your own issue, and given they are bot driven should be treated with the amount of relevance that any bot deserves.
