Did anyone els happen to catch the segment on the Today show this morning about the lady who sells pre-owned goods/clothing on Ebay?
For those who didn't, It was about one persons junk being another persons treasure and how this Seller makes a living out of trawling through OP shops and re-selling her finds on Ebay . The story sugested that her Ebay sales paid the bills. A great story really (and a plug for her book).
So I thought I would just check out her user name and see exactly how her sales are going.
Hmmmmm.
57 feedback ratings in the last 12months!
So now I am thinking perhaps the story was instigated as a promotional tool by Ebay but then I remembered the big banner that was at the top of me screen yesterday when I logged into my account:
EBAY
42 million items
84% brand new
66% free shipping
and I quickly remembered that ebay are doing everything they can to get rid of people doing exactly what this lady has been doing.
In my opinion, with the new changes being implemented next month, Ebay do not want small sellers selling pre-owned items on their site.
I am one of these sellers and yes I am worried.

I am a small seller too. I sell mainly dvds that I have watched and some other stuff. I wouldn't worry too much about Ebay, they can try to get rid of certain people but Aussies are known not to do what others want us to do. Per capita we travel overseas much more than many other nations do much even when there is high alerts for sicknesses (swine flu, ebola, bird flu, etc) or terrorist threats are high.
I am not going to pushed around by Ebay if they really want me gone then they are going to have to delete me. I abide by their so called policies even when they don't. I am an honest seller and buyer and will continue doing what I do unphased by them. I suggest every other Aussie do the same. This country has slide down over the years from being the lucky country to the rip off country but I won't give up hope trying for it to be the lucky country once again. However I have given up on trying to find the best deal in retail, as someone always has a "hardy used item in excellent condition" and I always save!!!
Small sellers rule and 2nd hand sellers rule!!!

Could've been a promotion for charity stores, eBay sellers probably made up a significant percentage of their annual turnover not so long ago, but I suspect that's declining.
Every now and then you'll find a store (or select staff in one) that doesn't like the idea of resellers purchasing their stock, but the majority I spoke to loved eBay sellers.

you should ring the tv station and say it was false advertising 57 sales in 12 months is hardly a booming business, tell them the real story about what ebay are doing.

Personally, I don't want this kind of story getting out there!!!
It screws up what a few of us have known and done for a while in a number of ways:
1. Buyers are tight and difficult as it is. This idiot has blown all our cover for her own gain, which turns out she's not doing so great after all! Why buy from here when they too will start trawling through Op Shops? Buyers may very well start dumping ebay for their local Op Shop.
2. Op Shops will only raise their prices knowing that ebayers are selling on their wares. Why should they sell cheap when they can up the prices and sell for more? In a sense that's already happening. So our profit margins get shot.
3. Most of us are nowhere near making money that pays the bills. Sometimes we do nicely but mostly we don't. Most are hobby sellers who enjoy the extra cash usually to buy from other hobby sellers. Even if we do make nice money - you will hear buyers screaming that they're being ripped off and that they are the business of ebay - even further justifying the poor attitude towards sellers that ebay already has.
4. With the money back guarantee policy to kick in on Nov 18, what will that mean for sellers doing what this stupid lady has told everyone we do?
I will keep doing what I have been but I am still concerned what this is going to mean for what was a nice little hobby to make a little extra cash. Hasn't there been enough damage to done to ebay, without this fool doing what she's done?
Oh brother!

The savvy ones have known that for a long time. 😉 Most of the people I spoke to who worked at one was glad to have resellers in the shop, but back then they didn't want everyone knowing about it because they worried people would stop donating. With the way eBay (and Australia Post) has been going, I think a lot of the resellers have stopped doing it, though, and it's starting to hit their bottom line I'd imagine.
Some of the stores have even tried to compete with eBay by researching selling prices here and then pricing their items just below. (Some of them have prices not even the most ambitious seller on eBay would try for ), but it rarely works for them because an eBay listing is available nationally if not worldwide, while an item in a store is available to the local population who may go in for a visit. I have one store near me that markets themselves as a 'boutique', but they often receive NWT donations from designer stores, so they tend to be able to get away with higher-end prices.

I don't think most people will dump eBay to go trawling through Op shops. Most people are too bust to spend hours on end looking through the dusty racks of mainly cheap brand, potentially damaged & unwashed items in the hope of finding something they like in their size.Yes they may find something of value but they are going to spend some time doing it.
There was an op shop selling on eBay & they had terrible fb for way overpriced postage (i think $5 more than actual price) damaged items & bad service.Yes it's all for charity but they don't clean or wash anything.Charity doesn't get a free pass for bad product with eBay customers.
Some op shops in Newcastle will be having a great time with the car load of clean, perfect conditon clothes i donated to get rid of the bulk of stuff i was going to sell. The way things are going with eBay,the op shops will be getting a lot more donations from defected to death sellers.

At a guess I would say it was advertising for her book as you mentioned.

Doesn't make much sense to give an ID with so little fb to advertise your
book. If you only get 50 odd fb in 12 months, that's hardly a success story.
Who would buy that book?
