I sell a number of smaller items. They don't cost alot and the cheapest way I've found to send them is when they are classed as large letters. These don't have tracking. In the past couple of months I have an increase in the number of orders that have gone missing (and none of them have been 'returned to sender'). This, of course, means that I have to resend the order or refund the buyer. Is anyone else find this too?
Also, is there a cheaper way of sending small orders with tracking other than Australia Post - both domestically and internationally? I'm concerned that if I raise my prices to include tracking, that I will loose customers since what I sell other sellers sell for the same price that I am.

Yes in the past two weeks we have seen a sharp rise.
We have not had a missing item reported in 2-months then this past week 4.
Mostly WA addresses.
Like you we send using standard mail with no tracking so we just send out a replacement after asking a few questions.

Can't say I've noticed any change over the past two years plus. Before that it seemed a bit more common. But the past two years my parcels are reliably going across Australia and all around the world. If anything, there are now longer transit times. A week to the US is now two weeks.

Has anyone else had a larger than normal number of items go missing lately? Sent via Aust post
No. Half my items go as untracked large letters. In the last 2 years I have had 2 RTS and 1 INR, which I naturally refunded. Out of roughly 500 letters.
