Twyngwyn's screen cap shows $12.45

Just checked what I had printed out and $12.20 was the Mypost rates before discounts.

If you use your own packaging its like this
up to 500g $8.95
500g - 1kg $12.20
1kg - 3kg $15.35
3kg - 5kg $18.50
It means that its a price increase but it is set for Australia wide, no variations on areas.
The 500g used to be $8.50 now $8.95
up to 3kg was $14.55 now $15.35
and up to 5kg was 17.65 now $18.50
The only difference is the 500g - 1kg section which is good, because before that was lumped in with the 3kg section.
I am just wondering how the Ebay labels are going to look with this.
I hope they change in time without glitches.

The thing I find strange is they say it will be easy for bussiness to know what the postage price will be to anywhere in Australia as it is no longer distance based for under 5kg. But they will still be charging me by an area deifined network that makes it cheaper to send to populated areas over rural areas. Price can differ as much as 30%, so a small parcel accross town will be $5.82 but to a rural area will be $8.50.

Yes I hope it will all be simplified.
It's a pain when you have one price for urban and another for rural. It should all be changed now. fingers crossed.

So in effect we will have 12 categories, but I wonder how long and far down the track when maybe this gets too complicated ?
Would it make sense from a cost and productivity perspective for all parcels to be sent in satchels regardless, and have just 4 sizes/categories ?
Sell satchels for 5c (they cost 3c) each over the counter, and in bulk to online retailers and sellers. With identical outside packaging there would have to be improvements in automation sorting with fixed location labels driving down Australia Post costs.
Not great from an environmental perspective though having everything wrapped in plastic satchels...

Can anyone explain what Aus Post means by 'own packaging' & why it appears cheaper than using the prepaid satchels?
Is my poor old brain missing something!

Yes lizzys - I was confused too - but digital-ghost has explained it to me in this thread - and it's worth repeating
@curraone wrote:Well I just can't get my head around it - what's the difference between these 3 and why is (1) dearer?
(1) Prepaid Parcel Post satchels Postage for eligible Australia Post satchels up to 5 kg is a fixed price to anywhere in Australia based on size, rather than weight.
Small $9.20
(2) Parcels up to 5kg - Australia Post packaging
Small $8.95
(3) Parcels up to 5kg - own packaging
500g $8.95
digital*ghost: Based on current info - pre-paid are just the satchels where you buy the satchel with postage included. Aus Post packaging are the flat rate satchels or BX boxes that have specified weight / costs but you just buy the packaging up front and pay for postage as you use them, either through My Post, eBay or other systems. (PayPal look like they're introducing a postage labeling system at some point in the future as well). Own packaging would be any other packaging, and / or non-flat rate parcels.
If you buy a flat rate satchel, they range from 15c to 45c, but a small (500g) satchel is 25c in the smallest pack size - buy the satchel (25c) and postage ($8.95) in one, and it's $9.20
