You cannot track letters so cannot give the customer a tracking number.
If it goes missing you lose a dispute and the buyer gets their money back.

An item is either posted or it isn't. If it's posted, you mark as posted. If it's not posted, don't mark as posted.*
A package either has a tracking number or it doesn't. If it does, enter that into the correct field. If it doesn't, leave it blank.*
When you do it this way, a buyer can look at the order details and see the information for themselves, depending on what you have done they will indicate one of the following statuseseses, as well as the shipping provider:
In the case of pick-up items, I always advised the buyers, after the item was picked up, that I was marking the item as posted purely to indicate the sale was complete and move it out of the list of items awaiting further action / postage.
*I'm aware there are exceptions to this, with auto-uploads of shipping status, tracking numbers etc, as well as general preferences in order processing for individual sellers, just keepin' it simple. 🙂

I wanted to mark for my own references. Is it possible?
Use the private note function.

WOW, you got a reply. Go Lyndal! Good answer by the way. I thought everyone knew that letters weren't tracked unless sent registered.

"even if i had a tracking number i'm too lazy to type it into the tracking place", but I'm sure one of the friendly members of the eBay discussion forum will do it for me, because I AM bone idle lazy and prefer that everyone else does my work for me.
Thank you for buying from me, a trusted seller.
(Please note: The above does not apply to me mates that buy from me to boost my feedback)

Pay the $3.70 for registered post then you have a tracking number. Add the cost into your item price
