How do we find the total profit on a sale after the fees?

There are apparently eBay fees (7.9% for a casual seller, capped at $100) and PayPal fees.

So, I'm just wondering if there is anywhere that we can find the total profit on a sale after all of the necessary fees are added up? PayPal's website shows a deduction but I don't think the eBay fees are accounted for there and I can't find out where it says on eBay.

How did you get $0.38, shouldn't it be $0.45?

PP fees are 2.4% + 30c  so in your example of $3.25 the PP fee would be $0.378 which rounds up to $0.38

I included postage because from reading the boards, postage is included in the PP fees. Also, that's how PP adds it up on their website.

Sorry, that was probablt really confusing ๐Ÿ™‚ If you include the postage fees then it will give you the cost for the overall sale, or without the PP P&H fee it will give you the raw cost of the item.

As I usually sell multiples of the same item, some paid with PP some not, some sent with other items/some sent on their own, some 'free' postage etc then I find it easier to know the raw cost of each item ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, it comes to $0.38c only the item value cost was calculated. However, PayPal takes the total cost including postage into the calculation.

I did the math using your numbers and $5.25 (total cost including postage) comes to a fee of $0.426, rounded upto $0.43, which is the exact total fee that shows on the PayPal website. So, they do take fees from postage too.

No problem and thanks for clarifying. I didn't know the % breakdown of how PayPal works out its fees before you told me and it helped alot.

It seems eBay doesn't take a fee for postage but PayPal certainly does. Not that there's anything wrong with this, just good to have clarification on how the system works.

PayPal charge their fee on the amount deposited into your PayPal account.

Hi, Don't know if this is helpful to you, but I have found that subscribing to the free Ebay "Sales Reports" is helpful to me, it gives you your monthly sales, average cost of sale item, paypal fees etc, It gives you a tally of your sales but not individually. It's a great tool to use and source information from. Good luck!

Thanks very much, I'll look into that. leader-of-the-band emailed me a fantastic spreadsheet with pre-defined calculations of the eBay and PayPal fees, so all you have to do is type in the sale price of the item, the listed postage, the actual postage... and wallah! It shows how much is left at the end. I'm happy to send it to anyone if they'd like it or leader-of-the-band can too.
