Do you have the tracking number and proof of lodgement?
If you have both of these it is likely that you will win any PayPal dispute should one be raised.
If you don't, the buyer will win anyway, so you may as well bite the bullet and give the refund without teeth pulling so that you do look like "the good guy"
It you do have those details, the choice is really yours and what policies you have for the operation of your business.
You really should get back onto Aus Post though, if you have the TN and POL, force the issue of the $50 discressionary payment. They lost your item, you can prove it - they will dance a little bit, trll you you shoulda insured it, throw up a few smoke screens etc - but hold your ground, escalate to supervisor if necessary and just keep saying - You had my item, you agreed to deliver my item from point a to point b when I payed the postage price and gave you my item. You now are unable to locate my item and you have not fulfilled your contract, you are in breach of contract, I would like compensation please.
At first they will offer you the refund on postage only, but hold your ground for the cost of the item (up to $50) as well

Did you pay Aust Post cash or by card?
If by card, you can get the date paid from your bank, tell Aust Post complaints which PO you went to on that particular day, and they can search and find your tracking number - and they can tell you if it was delivered and the date delivered.
Been there, done that when I lost a receipt, and found out date, time and where a 'missing' parcel was delivered.

that's really good news for you. I'm pleased it has turned up.
You've probably worked this out for yourself by now, but keep all of those receipts for a lot longer, until either tax time or you are sure that the item is there.

That's an understatement. Just search the forums for a number of threads of late deliveries over the last month. A five hour trip down the road took them 3.5 weeks to delivery but it was then returned to sender not known at address. Address was correct and person does live there.
