I want to restrict selling in rural areas. How can i do this

As the heading says. I want to restrict selling in rural areas. How can i do this?

I know you can restrict countries. But i would like to restrict rural areas etc because i would like to offer free shipping and it would not be feasible to do this if i had to ship to rural areas, or even far cities like Perth, as im based in Sydeny

Any ideas?

I offer free shipping on around half my items and I track all my sales in an excel spreadsheet outside of Ebay.

The free shipping items often sell consistently SLOWER than the other items - and I do swap the items around regularly - it makes no difference. I think you need to be careul how and what you offer free shipping on.

If a buyer searches by price (as in, types in a maximum price on the lefthand menu) and you sell something free postage at $20, then youre competing against everything under that that has postage on top, even if combined it comes to greater than $20.

So I have a top at $20 + free postage. Someone else has a top at $16 + $8 postage ($24 total). The latter one is more expensive, but looks cheaper in the search because only the $16 shows (until you go into the listing), therefore gets more views and watches, and higher chance of being bought.

Giving free postage does put you up in the search ranks, but not significantly enough to make a large difference over say a month unless you are selling hundreds of items, then you can have a control group with no free sell to compare sale rates, and because of the above, its almost non existant..

Also, the majority of my buyers ARE from the areas youre trying to exclude. So again, make sure you know your market really well. HALF my buyers are in Perth, rural Queensland and South Australia, despite lower populations, that makes sense because they have less access and less of a variety of stores, hence why they are a larger part of the online market for some items.

We sell products that have an RRP of approximately $1,000.00.

After eBay takes their 10.9% commission, we are left with a 20% G.P.

Freight within metro VIC & NSW costs on average $120.00, which is our cost of freight o all buyers.

Freight to Perth and Far North Queensland is on average $300+

At that rate, we are making a loss on those listings.

We wish that we could amend our listings to reflect the true cost of freight for large and bulky items that require specialised freight services. Albeit, eBay does not support that option.

As such, we have had to exclude certain locations (i.e. NT, WA, FNQ, PO Boxes & International). This can be achieved under 'Manage Listing'.

I hope that you find this helpful.

Cheers,

They might have - 6 YEARS AGO when they first posted.

They may not even be selling anymore after all that time.
