Is it possible to cancel a sale because the buyer has a Bad Attitude?

Someone nought a book on Tuesday but did not pay for it or complete checkout. Today I sent what I would call a friendly reminder. I did not demand immediate payment, simply asked the buyer to get in touch about payment.  Buyer paid and sent a snippy message saying she would work to her time frame THANK YOU. Not happy. I have sent three message about ebay's policies and procedures (buyers are expected to pay within four days of sale date), the fact that silences extending over days indicate possible non-payment and that if she is not happy with my service I will gladly refund her payment immediately and apply to cancel the sale. Indeed I do not want to sell to her and feel like refunding her payment in any case.  But don't know if Bad Attitude is a good enough reason for ebay to cancel the sale. I don't care about getting back lost fees.

As she has paid, I think you will have to do the 'huff and puff' bit - like a lot of sellers are having to do with all sorts of obscure byers these days.

Just curious as to exactly how many messages you have sent the buyer since she made her purchase 3 days ago ?

JMO but I would have waited till either tomorrow or Sunday before sending a polite reminder and there is no way I would have mentioned anything to do with ebay policy. I think you may have come across as impatient and a stickler for policy-no offence intended, I don't know either yourself or the buyer.

Something along the lines of the following would have sufficed.

"Hi X,

I have your item all packed, labelled and ready to post, however I'm not able to locate a payment from you. Would you be kind enough to please check as to how and when you paid as I would very much like to post your item as quickly as possible.

Warm Regards

X

Yes, this one isn't going to end well for me....  My first message was inoffensive.  And her message was so rude, saying she would work to her timeframe, with many exclamation marks and capital letters and that damn phrase "not happy" which I hate.  She practically threatened to leave negative feedback just because I asked her to get in touch.  A sign of the times. People feel they can send rude emails with impunity because it might as well be anonymous.

Ebay send a reminder after 48hours so I wouldn't dream of sending anything else before 24 hours after that then I just send the invoice with a note asking if they can confirm payment details as I have been unable to trace their payment, a tactful way of reminding them without accusing them of not paying. If I don't hear back from them by the end of day 4 I open the dispute. As a buyer I would consider any more communication than that to be totally ott and would probably wait until 7 days 23 hours and 59 seconds before making payment.Smiley Wink

Perhaps I should try your diet and then I could lose today anyway... But whether I am right or wrong, does anyone know if I can cancel the sale?  I want to cancel it.  What if I just refund her payment - what, if anything, would that achieve? Thanks.

If you send a cancellation, she may not accept, or she may even decline, which means you lose your fees (which you said didn't matter in this instance). It would probably also guarantee you of a negative, which she can still leave with a cancellation. You may still get a neg anyway.

I would make sure it's sent with tracking (register it if it's a large letter item) and that way if she gets nasty and says it hasn't arrived, you are covered.

You may find that by the time she gets it, she's forgotten about the correspondence and is happy with what she bought. Stranger things have happened.

At the end of the day it's up to you if you just want to refund and forget about it, or post it and hope for the best. If you're not worried about the fees, you could just refund and then do nothing. It will just fall off your selling page in 2 months.
