Laptop sold at Auction. Buyer refused to pay insurance.

My son just sold his laptop using my account for $355 at an absolute bargan price.  In the description my son stated that the buyer had to pay for shipping costs and insurance. His exact words " You must pay the Australia post fees if you wanted it posted, also must be registered and insured email me for Quote. Prefer Pick Up "

The buyer has now paid via Paypal for the laptop $355 and freight charges $22.65 for freight with tracking. Total $377.65

I sent him a message that he needs to pay for the insurance as well an extra $14.55 and now he refuses as he is saying we should have quoted the amount before auction end.  His reply is as follows:

Thanks for your message, the specific amount of shipping and tracking is $22.65 which i have paid already.
I have not seen the $14.55 for the insurance, and also you should add it to the amount before the auction ended in the postage fee.
I will not pay anymore for postage and tracking, as i paid $22.65 postage fee accordingly. Please send it to me ASAP.

I'm not sure how to handle this situation without it turning sour..Any advice...thanks guys!

Hi Coast, we have put it in an AP box. We got a slightly bigger one to allow for enough cusioning to protect the laptop. It is not a matter of getting it shipped cheaper.  I have a service that will get it to the buyer ffor around the $13.00 But they do not offer insurance. I really wanted it to be covered by insurance. My biggest concern is that it gets damaged along the way and the buyer wants a refund. Which is alright for the buyer, but then were does that leave me? It never crossed my mind that soemone would switch it over. and if they did, how would I prove it even if I have written down the serial number, what can I do about it???? makes you not want to sell anything.

I appreciate your input ...thanks.

Many moons ago I worked at a wrecking yard, you would be shocked to see how many people would buy a part, replace their faulty part and then bring in their old faulty part and claim we sold it to them. We engraved all parts before they left but still people were stupid enough to try it. I've heard isolated cases of it happening on eBay too, particularly with electronics and that's why I'd be recording all identifying particulars before sending it off. I'm sure your buyer is honest, but there are plenty out there that aren't so it's just a good habit to get into.

Just found dimensions online satchel is 510 x435 for

1. The box doesn't fit . I would need to cut the box down

2. It costs more than just posting it as it is. Satchel is $23.60, plus $2.95 for SOD plus Insurance $6.00 Total $37.55 The orginal postal cost in the box as is, is $37.40

The $23.60 is the price for an express satchel.  A regular 5kg satchel satchel is $16.70.  So total with SOD plus insurance is just under $26

Insurance will NOT cover you for damage in the mail.   it is very very difficult to prove to aust post that it was packed by you, securely enough to travel from Vic to WA.  Aust Post do NOT OFFER a 'fragile' mail service.

Wowwwwww ....are you serious????  I don't know what to say. At the end of the day you must wonder why your in business, when you have to spend half the time trying to stop fraud. Rather than getting on with your life.

Putney, thank you... I didn't know that either. A bit misleading, they should name it lost article insurance not insurance. My next comment would be you lost it , you find it....It's in your possession you should be responsible for it. Why do I need to pay you to find it? Why is it always the small man gets the end of the stick???
