Limiting payment options again.

Ebay forces sellers to offer PayPal or merchant accounts as payment. As the only way to use merchant facilities with them is through PayFlow (a subsidary of PayPal) or Cybersource which charge huge fees. They have now deemed it against policy for sellers to mention in their listings that they would prefer to be paid via any other method. They are just trying to force people to use PayPal which they have been warned about before. If you are also against this please report them to the ACCC which is a really easy process.

As far as I am aware you can still pick up the phone and make a credit card payment direct to the seller who has a merchant credit facility.

I have also made payment direct to the seller by emailing him.

What has changed?

I think the OP is a seller who is unhappy at having to offer paypal, etc - not a buyer trying to pay via alternative methods.

That is the way I read it too but I don't understand why it has to be done through paypal....I have never paid a seller who offers merchant credit facility via paypal in any way.

When ebay first announced that they were only going to allow safe payment methods there were many, many complaints to the ACCC. These did absolutely no good at all as the ACCC ruled that ebay were perfectly entitled to do this however they asked them to allow the use of Paymate too (now being discontinued because so few people used it). Ebay agreed and because so many people wanted to keep using bank deposit ebay allowed that to continue too.

Some sellers have a very one sided view of Paypal, they only see the fees and the very rare claim that goes against them, they don't think of all the buyers prepared to pay more because they know they are protected nor do they take into account the people who don't have the cash in their bank account but can pay with a credit card. Aside from those reasons Paypal payments save an awful lot of time, no continually checking your bank account to see if a payment has come in, You get a real time view in ebay of a buyer having paid and can print off a label straight away without having to log into Paypal.
