Listing I cancelled months ago just sold.

A few months ago, I listed an old record on eBay, but it didn’t sell, so I eventually cancelled the listing, and donated the record to my little brother’s school fete secondhand store.

However, today I got a notification that someone had purchased the record. Fortunately, they haven’t paid yet, so I sent them an apologetic message and then cancelled the purchase. 

I don’t check my eBay listings overly often, but I never saw the listing go up again. Does anyone know why this happened or how I can prevent this from happening again?

It's also possible if you had the free auto relists on that when you ended the listing it rolled onto the next free auto relist.

There is a function to end auto relists to the right of item in your selling list.

They did say they never saw the item relisted. So I would say an ebay glitch, happens to me a few times a year. And yes, auto relist is not on.
