I have noticed a "seller" who hasn't got any fb for selling, only buying, is listing, then the item is abruptly withdrawn "due to the item no longer being available. I'm disappointed cos I had a couple of these in my watch list intending to bid and I'm thinking they don't want to pay ebay fees. This has happened to a least 3 listings today. Any thoughts?

On one item it was stated that they had the right to remove listing because it was advertised elsewhere. I contacted them to say it was against ebay rules and they said they didn't know that.
Probably didn't know that because its not against eBay rules, or for that matter real world rules. No contract has been entered into so the seller is intitled to remove it from sale. The "they were no longer available" excuse is one of the 4 excuses eBay lets you use, forget the exact wording something like: got broken, error in listing and one other. No longer available is the first on the list so most probably just click it. There is a time limit on when you can withdraw items but the system prevents it happening after the time limit.
I am sure you would have been more annoyed if the seller had let the auction finish and then not sell it to you, that is illegal in both the eBay world and the real world.

Usually when ending a listing early, eBay charges a extra fee for too many early endings. But it's recorded. I admitt to ending my listings.
