Mailing list

Is it against ebay rules to create a mailing list external to ebay with email addresses of previous buyers and email them every month?I understand there are anti-spam laws in place that would need to be followed.

Yes-it's in the help section somewhere and is the equivalent of unsolicited mail.

If people want to subscribe to your newsletter, they'll opt in.

JMO but if you did that me, I would NOT be impressed no matter how nice a seller you were.

Found it-stupid customer support section kept kicking the bucket lol

Sending unsolicited (without prior permission) commercial email offers to bidders for the same or similar products that they have bid on in the past.

Thanks.  Not that I really like them either, but I would of thought if someone actually purchased something it wouldn't count as unsolicited.

Yes, it is unsolicited. The seller has gained access to the buyers email address for the purpose of that one transaction only.

Just because a buyer buys one item from a seller that doesn't mean they want to have emails cluttering their inbox from that seller. Imagine a buyer who buys a lot of items online every month.. if all those sellers started sending them newsletter/offers...

It does pose another question though. Can I have in my terms and conditions for a listing that marketing emails will be sent from time to time?

I mean using ebay to get the email addresses and then using them for my own website, I don't think ebay really have a say what I do outside ebay but if I included it in a listing it then wouldn't be classed as spam for my own website.

Circumvention of ebay policy and NOT a good idea anyway-reminds me of those spammy sites that if you don't untick a box, you will get spammed with rubbish.

Some examples of offers outside of the eBay site include:

Using member contact information obtained from eBay or using any eBay system to offer to sell any listed item outside of eBay
