Well, we are encouraged to NOT communicate with Buyers, so I limit my direct messages and ONLY send a quick "thank you" to their email (not via eBay).
But I've had some questions recently about whether I have posted items. Yet I've marked those items as "posted" in Selling Manager! Ummm... What THE?
I went and checked through my archives and previous sales - it seems that Ebay is NOT always sending that email to buyers that is titled "Updates for your purchases from [SellerID]".
It appears that it sends the "Item Posted" email if you enter a tracking number, or if you use Click & Send. But if you use an untracked postage method (eg: letter) it doesn't send it? It definitely USED to send it, so did something change?
You can check your own - in Selling Manager just look at the "envelope" icon against a line item... and click it to get a record of the messages. The Item Posted one is "Order Update".
Do any of you know what is going on? Am I doing it wrong? Is there a way to make eBay send the messages?

I still use eBay Singapore to send out bulk emails notifying buyers that their item has been sent - eBay has proved many times that its message system is not a good one - Communication DSR for eBay - 1:|

Hmmm....I dont enter any tracking details and all of my records has the 'Order Update' for when I have marked the item as 'Posted'.
I am assuming that they have recieved the emails.

Well, I had a pickup item recently and accidentally had ticked "Item Posted" and guess what? It sent the Buyer an update for that. :^O
This is very strange indeed.
HEY... I just noticed that the ones that are not getting the notifications sent all seem to be those where I have nominated the Postage method as "AusPost Regular Parcel"
centrelinegraphics - almost all of your items are "Standard Postage (AusPost Parcel with tracking)", so I assume that those will all send the email even if you don't enter tracking. Same as all my Registered ones are OK (and some don't have tracking entered).
digital*ghost - yours seem to be "Standard Postage (Standard delivery)", so maybe that method also sends emails OK?
sportandplay - your cheaper ones seem to be the same as mine "Standard Postage (AusPost Regular Parcel)" - hence no update email sent for those ones only?
I wonder if that is the key? There is a glitch for one of the postage methods?

I sent two
Standard Postage (AusPost Regular Parcel)
today, and both got emails.

Sorry, I should have added that neither had tracking.

coops who encourages sellers not to communicate with buyers? I am just a little surprised by that statement.

bump I think he is getting at the automatic 5 star for communication if you do not communicate and upload tracking within 24 hours.

I was being a little bit sarcastic, Bump.
But behind the sarcasm was some truth. As posted by silversterio2 in post #4, we only qualify for automatic 5-stars for communication if we DO NOT communicate with Buyers. Only eBay could come up with a rule like that :^O
Read this announcement from May 2012...

Interestingly, there is a comment in the "Best practices" section that "Once you upload tracking, your buyers will receive automated emails from eBay with tracking information and status on their orders"
Further on is a link to this page:

So, I wonder what happens if I enter BODGY tracking info - for example the words "(not trackable)"

Yep - all parcels I send have tracking via C&S, so if I'm sending as a large letter, it's technically not a parcel delivery so unless it's going registered, I select standard delivery as it seems the most appropriate to me.
Re: tracking info, I have had up to three different sellers use the same tracking number (legitimitely, though, as in this week I received one parcel containing 6 items purchased from 3 completely different sellers, with the tracking number that had been uploaded by each of them), and a few use invalid (seemingly random) numbers...only thing is, order updates go straight to my gmail spam folder, which I emptied not so long ago, so I couldn't tell you with 100% if they all triggered an update, only that from memory most (if not all) of them seem to.
The sellers who send one parcel / tracking number all qualified for the auto-5 star for communication, though, which I find interesting.

I have had a few recently asked if their item was sent when I have it marked as posted - latest one was today for a book I posted on the 7th
Whenever I buy something, I always get the update email saying my purchase has been posted

I haven't had any problems from sellers I've bought off.. When it's marked as posted I always get an e-mail saying so
