So I just got an email stating there are new categories that now need part numbers etc. The list is huge.
Nice timing right before christmas.

From what I could gather from the email, the categories requiring product IDs are actually the same, they're just extending it to multi-variation listings in those categories.
They did also expand the list for categories that can use the variation format. (I'm not 100% sure what's new and what's not, but if anyone wants to double-check whether they can use variations now, the complete list can be downloaded in Excel format here: http://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/ebay-for-business/multi-variation-listings ).

I know what the title of the email is.... It's a summary of the two separate updates contained in the actual message. If you click on the link to learn more about the product identifiers, it shows you a list of all the applicable categories, and I didn't spot any new ones, but there looked like several new categories in the multi-variation format list (I can't be sure because they're not my categories, so I don't always pay attention to what is and isn't available or required).
Update 1
Identifier requirements for multi-variation listings
After January 31, 2016, Multi-variation listings in selected categories will be required to include these product identifiers: Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), manufacturer part number (MPN), and brand, where applicable. This is to help boost the visibility of these listings on eBay and external search engines.
We know the busy Christmas selling period is coming up, so don’t worry, adding product identifiers to your Multi-variation listings is optional until the end of January.
To benefit sooner, add product identifiers to your Multi-variation listings now.
And update 2
More categories now available for multi-variation listings
We’ve expanded the number of categories that Multi-variation listings are available in, so you can to offer even more choice to your buyers.
Rather than creating multiple listings for one product, Multi-variation listings enable you to include variations of a product in one fixed price (Buy It Now) listing.

Hooray!!! There is an eBay fairy after all! They added variations for my category, I must have asked for this a dozen times over the last couple of years. I know how I'll be spending January then.

Que?
Your OP suggested eBay was increasing the number of categories that required product IDs, I responded with the info - as I understood it - from the email, and your response to that was just to mention the title of the email - I pretty much had to guess why you would do that, and from where I was sitting, in context of the thread, it came across as you insisting the info in your OP was correct, so I simply showed how I came to the conclusions I did - I had no idea I was "arguing a point" re: new categories, again your second post just said you saw 'no new ones', how am I supposed to know if that's referring to new categories requiring product IDs or new categories which can use the variation format?
Sheesh indeed. o_O
