Paypal & bank account verification question (& seller restrictions)

If i have a bank account on file with paypal to transfer funds to but its not verified does that give them rights to withdraw money from it if become in debt to paypal or ebay?

I really don't want them to have access to my bank account as i refuse direct debits from it from anyone, lets say they make a mistake, i'd have stuff all chance of getting the money back, its happened to people i know.

The reason i ask is, i have 2 ebay accounts, both in good standing with good ratings that meet the requirements etc. The 1st one i've been selling on for over a decade on & off, this 2nd one i setup only for buying, but also started selling on it around 6 mths ago. On this one I got a msg from ebay saying i'm now limited to selling 25 items or $1,600 worth per mth, when i click on the  "Request higher selling allowance" link it wants me to login to my paypal account & verify my bank account by them making a small deposit etc.

Strange thing is both ebay accounts are linked to the same paypal account, both with automatic fee payments setup from paypal, i have a credit card on file with paypal & also a bank account which is used to transfer funds from paypal.

Also, when i login via the paypal page theres a msg on right hand side saying  'Notifications Complete bank setup' which is also wanting me to verify with a deposit etc. Now that msg has been sitting there for about 3 years, i have not done so but to my surprise had not faced any restrictions at all to my 1st ebay account for not complying.

Now if paypal already have the right to fleece my bank account then i guess i may as well go ahead & comply with the request, but if not then i'd rather not give them more power than i have to.

phorum_junkie, if i then move to a small town & disguise my identity will they still track me down? sorry i couldn't resist 😉 I guess i kinda knew that in the back of my mind but if they're gonna take money i'd rather it be on my credit card not from my bank account & make it as difficult as possible for them to do so.

I'm pretty lucky, i've only had a handful of chargebacks in all these years, all for under $20 so it hasn't financially ruined me. Maybe i figure i've been so lucky its bound to happen sometime soon, eg sold a magazine to overseas buyer for $58, but insurance is $22 so im not going to make them pay that, all i can do is cross my fingers & hope it gets there.

If you had nothing to hide you wouldn't be afraid of Paypal. If they take money from you that you think is unjustified (having regard to Paypal's Terms and Conditions which you agree to when you sign up), then you refer the matter to the Ombudsman.

Sorry, barney, but I won't be buying anything from you. You seem to have a skewed idea of customer service.

davewil1964 your wrong there, i have nothing to hide, i'm afraid of paypal because of things i have read on discussion boards etc about sellers having the misfortune of being ripped off by dishonest buyers doing chargebacks, or honest buyers doing chargebacks because of postal stuff ups etc. Going to the ombudsman is well after moneys already gone from my account.

And as you very well know, anyone who wants to sell on ebay has no choice but to agree with paypals terms & conditions, that doesn't mean i have to be happy about it.

As you should very well know, a seller can offer any of 3 safe payment methods - Paypal, Paymate or merchant credit card facility.

Admittedly you might find your buyer base limited if you don't offer Paypal, but the choice is there.

If your in touch with the reality of trading on ebay you would say non existent rather than limited, have a look at my listings (or past listings i should say) do i look like someone who is a professional seller who would you use merchant credit card facilities? And my not wanting to accept paypal terms has nothing to do with my customer service, my feedback record speaks for itself.
