Seller wants me to cancel Paypal transaction and give them my Paypal account details

Hi, I am new to E-bay and would like some advice. I have purchased an item but when I looked at the Seller's item it showed the item as "not paid" despite me paying it immediately via Paypal.

When I looked at my Paypakl account it reflected the amount as unclaimed. I contacted the seller via e-mail to ask them what had happened and received a reply saying there was a problem with their Paypal e-mail and would I please cancel the transaction on my side and send my Paypal details to them.

Obviously this would be a violation of E-bay's selling policy as the transaction would now be outside of E-bay. What do I do in a situation like this?Do i cancel the transaction or ask the person to open another Paypal account and get E-bay to create another invoice for the item?

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

Personally I would not proceed with such a transaction.  I would report the seller to eBay and insist that eBay cancel the transaction as the seller has provided no safe method for you to make payment which is a requirement of a listing.  It may take several phone calls and some time to achieve this outcome unfortunately.

I personally would be hesitant to proceed with the transaction as well, but it is not correct that the transaction would be outside eBay nor that a safe payment method hasn't been provided.

The sale needs to take place on eBay so that the correct FVFs are charged, the payment method (safe or not) does not have to take place via eBay's checkout, and paying with PayPal is just as safe on eBay as it is off as long as the invoice or payment clearly reflects that it's for eligible goods (which are the same on eBay as off) that are being posted.

Quite often a seller asking you to cancel a PayPal payment and pay another way (like bank deposit) is a warning sign, but at the same time it's common for an incorrect email address to be used in the listing and a seller can't change it post-sale. They can try to sort it out at their end, or send a new invoice generated directly via PayPal - they may have asked for your PayPal email to do just that.

Obviously you should do what you're comfortable with, but your protection isn't compromised just because the eBay checkout isn't used, and the sale has still taken place on eBay.

All that needs to happen is that you cancel the payment and then ask the seller to send you their Paypal email address, they will have to disguise it as ebay don't allow you to send email addresses in case you are trying to deal outside ebay. You can then use the pay anyone tab and as long as you tick the box that says it is for goods you have exactly the same buyer protection as if it had gone through ebay. Ebay still get their fees so there really is nothing to reoport the seller for. The seller is actually putting themselves at risk as there is no seller protection against chargebacks for non ebay transactions.

Thank you for your reply. The seller made a genuine error and seemed honest. It was all sorted out in the end but thank you for your input. I am still learning about ebay.
