I went to list a gift card on another ID and came across the following message from eBay
I haven't read anything on these boards about changes to eBay policy regarding gift cards I did read the thread from 'mark' in January, but it looks like eBay may have clamped down on gift card selling.

there must be some verification process that you have to go through before listing gift cards

Sorry you can't list your gift certificate SlrSales but is good news that eBay is clamping down on this area.
From what I can see some very norty sellers are still listing a wide range of gift certificates and voucheres under tickets, travel - vouchers, gift certificates

thanks cats, it's no biggie for me that I can't list in the Gift Cards category.
I agree that it is a good thing that eBay have clamped down on listing of gift cards. However, as always, sellers will find creative ways around eBay policy. I have seen iTunes cards listed in the Music category.

I have to say, that message strikes me as a little strange. It's not saying you can't list a gift card, just says you can't list one in the gift card category unless approved and suggest you find a different category o_O - I wonder if that has anything to do with category-specific buyer protection limitations, since gift cards technically don't have PayPal protection? (eg as we know, some sellers will list protection-eligible goods in categories that don't have PayPal protection to try and compromise the buyer's eligibility, so perhaps it works both ways, and eBay are putting all non-approved seller's gift cards in categories that will mean protection is available by default).
As a side note, I searched the help pages for information about gift cards as suggested by eBay...check out eBay's 'suggestion' (the results when I clicked on full search were no better, none of them had anything to do with gift cards).

for a bit of background, I just went to try to list several brands of gift cards. I was interested with the recommended category results when I typed in the "Tell us what you're selling" box for each of the cards.

I just did the Myer gift card thing again, but manually changed the category to Gift Cards and switched to the advanced listing tool, and it went through without the seller warning.
It may just be that I got the warning on my other ID as I have not sold a lot of things and still have a feedback below 10.
I would be interested to know if there is an 'unofficial' restriction seeing as eBay tried to steer me in to other categories on this ID which has a higher feedback total and many sold items, although not in recent times.

I tried to list something as a gift card just then on this ID and get the same restriction message so I think the restriction is broader than that.
Searching gift cards there sure are a heck of alot less than there used to be, so the restriction appears to have some level of success.
Appears you found the work-around

I also tried to list a gift certificate on another id account. I got the same message, so had to list under "travel".
really annoying. I don't know why I couldn't list it there. Also i couldn't list using my free listings - i still got charged a listing fee, even though i had plenty of free listings still to use.
