I've asked this a few times before, but no one seems to know for sure, least of all PayPal themselves. Anyone been able to suss it yet? Firsthand experience, perhaps?

I for one am not going to say one way or the other, I have said it previously and been told I am wrong,
but as far as I am aware paypal requires proof of postage "to the buyers address" simply sending via regular post only gives you the generic proof that you sent something to somewhere in a particular area, but nowhere can you provide any documentation as to where it was sent exactly, no different to the previous Express post option. you would previously have had to add registered to regular post to qualify for PP protection, they have now changed that to signature required, so i my opinion to protect yourself you need to pay the extra $2.95.

Thanks, that sounds about right. I kind of do wonder what the point of 'free tracking' is if it's completely meaningless, but that Austpost for you.
We also have to pay for insurance on top of the $2.95 for a signature.

just because it does not offer paypal protection (or so we are lead to believe) does NOT mean it is meaningless.... if Granny posts a birthday present to grandson #1 it is handy to check to see if it arrived on his birthday or a day later.
If a large company sent a part out to a dealership on Wednesday, it is handy to check to see if it arrived on Friday as expected.
not meaningless at all

Tracking isn't meaningless at all. You can get an automatic 5 star for communication with tracking, by meeting certain criteria. eBay says a little about it here: http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/feedback/detailed-seller-ratings.html
I think the criteria is:
- 1 day handling time
- upload tracking into within 1 working day of payment date
- item paid by PayPal
- no communication took place between buyer and seller 14 days prior to transaction and until feedback was left for postage

It will qualify providing the receipt has the tracking number allocated to the correct postcode. Some people have managed to get postcodes on their receipts, some havent.
If you process through click and send, it costs the same price, then it will definitely qualify.
Having said all that, there is never any guarantee that paypal will decide in a sellers favour without a fight. They often mix up Australian and US policy, as long as you know your rights its not that hard to get them to do the right thing.

I meant it's meaningless as far as proof of posting and delivery is concerned.
Surely the grandson's going to ring granny to thank her when the card arrives, and they won't have PayPal intervening in their transaction.

Thanks Punchdrunk, I'll test this out the next time I send something replaceable of low value.
I agree that you never know how PayPal are going to react.... their rules are so ambiguous and vague, anything could happen.
