Something smelly here?

Recently we cleared out cupboards, amongst the items was a new dress, still with shop tags.   The buyer, who gave her work address, reported that the item was "smelly", which was a big problem for her.   She left 100% positive feedback (why if you are not happy?) yet at the same time asked if we could pass the dress on as a second chance offer and refund her.   (should have smelled a rat then?).

I'm hygiene conscious but must admit my sense of smell is not the best due to sinus problems and recently we had extraordinary high temperatures and fires in the area, putting our aircon under strain.    So, in good faith,  we apologised and refunded and, as per our return policy, sent the Buyer a tracked return satchel.   She reacted rather aloof about the return Satchel, saying she would not have minded paying return postage (Red Flag no 2?) but, nonetheless, said she would return the item in the post that day.

A week went by, no return satchel and as per Aus Post Tracking, it was not in transit.  So I queried her, now the story had changed, apparently she only mailed it the previous day....   is this a new kind of "scheme" going on, trying to get items for free?   Best to ensure your returns have tracking!

Re: Something smelly here?

Many flags there; never refund before you get the item back. Regardless of whether you or they are paying. Refund on return means there has to be a return.

There is not much you can do if you've given her her money back. All you can do is rely on her having a trace of morality.

Also, at least anecdotally, a satchel sitting in a courier's van for the best part of a day will smell exactly like dead cigarettes. So I've been told, I smoke so...

I'm afraid you have probably been dudded. Never refund until you have the item back, or decide it's not worth returning.

Re: Something smelly here?

It's advisable not to refund for an item being returned until you actually receive it back, as you may realise now, once you refund, there's not a lot you can do if the buyer decides not to return it.

I can definitely appreciate the customer service behind sending them a satchel so that they have no out of pocket expenses for returning an item, but if I may... I'd recommend allowing the buyer a choice. I usually say that I can send them a pre-paid and addressed satchel, or I'll reimburse P&H costs when I process the refund (I've only had to offer this a few times, but each time they actually opted to pay for post themselves, as they could get the item back to me - and therefore their refund - sooner, rather than waiting for the satchel from me).
