Starting small?

I'd like to ask if there's still room for small sellers and how small is too small? How about if I have 10 (yes 10) new items  (say for e.g. tech toys about $100 ea) bought directly from a distributor and want to just test the water. Is there any point, and would I need to open a store at that point?

Ultimately I'd like to expand to a supplement full time job more and more over 1-2 years.

I'm currently reading lots of similar posts, and will continue to research while awaiting your advice 🙂

You could start a new ID for the forums for future posts if you wanted to.

That's an idea 🙂 But if I want something like "top-tech-toys!" (or something) for the store name I'm kinda stuck, right? Can't change the display name?

I use a posting ID. All you need to do is use a different email address (get a free one like Hotmail or Yahoo if you don't have another one) and create a new account. I haven't set anything up in this ID because I never plan to use it for buying or selling. What I mean is, I haven't given eBay my address, phone number, linked it with PayPal or anything like that. I think all they have is my name and email address.

I use the forums in a different browser to my selling accounts. That way I don't forget and accidentally log in using one of those accounts. It also means the selling accounts can remain logged in. I have my accounts open in Chrome and Firefox and I access th forums using IE.

You can use any name you like that is available. That way you can keep the name you want to call your selling account available for that. If you're going to use a name similar to what you plan to use for selling, then it kind of defeats the purpose of having an anonymous posting ID.

You can change your current id name to "Top_ tech_ toys " on this account or any others that have a selling record if you want to fire things up quicker. I did this years ago with one of my selling accounts. I cant remember the process, but others will know how if you ask here on the forums. You could then start a new ID for the forums. It is pretty unlikely that people are going to try to keep track of the id used in this thread if this account has some selling history. ( you havnt upset anyone yet  have you  ?   Smiley Wink  )

I just went to help and contact, top left of screen and typed in "change user id name" and the links came up to make the change.

You can have several IDs, each one needs (as said above) it's own separate email. The rest of the details can be the same.

one thing not mentioned yet is that eBay will know which IDs are yours, of course, and to sell on any of them all have to be "in good standing".

That basically means if you have any defects etc. come through that limit selling, on one ID, you can't then use a different ID to get around it ... any limits apply equally to all IDs held by the one person.

Not anticipating any bad stuff, just so you know 🙂

Nope haven't upset anyone, I have a 100% record in my small dabblings over the years. I've checked out the process for changing ID so I'll look into that. Didn't realise it was so easy. Thanks to everyone, I've much appreciated all the advice and will be asking more no doubt. 🙂

Just remember that you can only change your ID name once a month, so if you change it and then think "oh no, I really don't like that after all", you're stuck with it for 30 days.
